(expired)Weekend Betting Preview 6-7 Sep

International football returns this week as the home nations begin what they hope will be a successful journey to South Africa in 2010. Andorra are the opposition as Fabio Cappello leads England into competitive action for the first time. Scotland face Macedonia in Group 9, a group that many Scots will see as their best chance to qualify for a major tournament in some time. In the only qualifier to be played in Britain this weekend, Cardiff hosts Wales v Azerbaijan in Group 4. This is arguably the toughest of all the European groups, as the Welsh will need to overcome the might of Germany and Russia to qualify. Haydock is host to the big race of the weekend, the Sprint Cup at 3:10pm. There is an impressive field assembled for this Group 1 race that has a history of big priced winners in the last six years. Andorra v England, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 7:00pm

England start their campaign to the first World Cup to be staged in South Africa on Saturday night, when they meet Andorra in Barcelona. Steve McLaren was the major casualty following England’s failure to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in fourteen years, with Fabio Cappello moving into the hot seat. Cappello has shown he is not afraid to bring in new faces at the expense of established internationals, as Jimmy Bullard’s inclusion and Michael Owen’s exclusion highlighted this week. England fans will be hoping Cappello’s new look team will be able to show the dedication and commitment to the national side that seemed to be lacking under Steve McLaren.

England are clear 1/50 favourites with Centrebet to start their qualifying campaign with a win, while Andorra are a massive 66/1 with BGbet to cause an equally massive upset and hand Fabio Cappello defeat in his first competitive game.

If Joe Cole scores at anytime during Andorra v England, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Macedonia v Scotland, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 2:00pm

After narrowly missing out on Euro 2008 from a qualifying group that included France and Italy, Scotland will feel they have a great chance of at least reaching the play-offs from Group 9. They will look to the encounters with Norway as the games that will decide whether they can reach the playoffs, although they will not rule out surprising group favourites Holland. They missed out on Euro 2008 by just two points, as they beat former World and European champions France 1-0 both home and away, and were unlucky to lose to Italy at Hampden in the 91st minute. However it is tricky games like this one against Macedonia that the Scots need to perform in more consistently if they are to qualify.

VCbet make Scotland the 5/4 favourites to win on Saturday, with Macedonia are 2/1 outsiders at BetWithRed.

If Darren Fletcher scores at anytime during Macedonia v Scotland, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Wales v Azerbaijan, Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 3:00pm

The Welsh are the only home nation to play at home this weekend when they entertain Azerbaijan at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. Following a disappointing Euro 2008 qualification John Toshack’s men will want to improve their away form this time, as they could only beat lowly San Marino on their travels during Euro 08 qualification. That will be difficult this time round though, with trips to Germany and Russia, as well as dealing with the winter climate in Finland late next year. However they will be optimism amongst the Welsh as a young team managed to hold both Germany and a strong Czech team to 0-0 draws in Euro 08 qualification, and there will be hopes that they can improve in the future.

Wales are big favourites with CentreBet at 33/100, while BetWithRed make Azerbaijan massive underdogs at 9/1.

If Gareth Bale scores at anytime during Wales v Azerbaijan, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Slovakia v Northern Ireland, Saturday, Five, 5:00pm

Northern Ireland are another of the home nations who will be full of confidence entering the qualification stages following their Euro 2008 qualification form. This included a historic 3-2 victory over Spain, thanks to a David Healy hat-trick, and a 2-1 defeat of Sweden, both at Windsor Park. However, they ultimately missed out by three points, as they crucially lost twice to Iceland. They lost 3-0 to the Icelanders in their opening game, and will be aiming to bring their form against the bigger teams to more low key games such as this one against the Slovaks, as they aim to qualify for a tournament for the first time since the World Cup in Spain in 1986.

Centrebet make Slovakia favourites at 4/5, while VCbet are 10/3 about Northern Ireland.

If Slovakia v Northern Ireland finishes 0-0 BGbet will refund all losing correct score bets on that game.¹

If Kyle Lafferty scores at anytime during Slovakia v Northern Ireland, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Georgia v Republic of Ireland, Saturday, Five, 5:00pm

Ireland, like England, are lead out by an Italian for the first competitive time this weekend when Giovanni Trapattoni takes them to Germany on Saturday night. FIFA have decided to move the first game of Group 8 following the recent troubles in Georgia, with the German city of Mainz in the Rhineland stepping in to host the game. The Republic will be looking for a bit of stability following four managers in four years, and Trapattoni will certainly command the respect of the Irish players with twenty major titles to his name in over thirty years of management.

Ireland are the 7/10 favourites with VCbet, while BGbet have Georgia as the 10/3 outsiders.

If Andy Reid scores at anytime during Georgia v Republic of Ireland, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

1st goalscorer 2nd chance

Place a first goalscorer bet on Andorra v England, FYR Macedonia v Scotland, Wales v Azerbaijan, Georgia v Rep of Ireland, Slovakia v Northern Ireland and Israel v Switzerland this weekend, and if your player fails to score first but scores at any other time in the match, VCbet will refund your stake as a free bet on any future match.2

Weekend Racing from Haydock, Live on Channel 4, Saturday, 2:00pm

This weekend’s big race is the Betfred Sprint Cup from Haydock on Saturday (3.10pm).

Utmost Respect and African Rose head the betting at 7/2 and 4/1 with VCbet and Centrebet respectively; although in a quality field they are sure to face many challengers. Aidan O’ Brian saddles three runners in the shape of Abraham Lincoln, Astronomer Royal and US Ranger, with champion jockey Jamie Spencer aboard the latter, a 15/2 chance with Centrebet. Richard Hughes will look to repeat his 10/1 2004 Sprint Cup success on Tante Rose when he rides Astronomer Royal this time, at a similarly priced 12/1 with VCbet.

Asset is the ride for Frankie Dettori and is Godolphin’s big hope for this race, although he is as big as 20/1 with VCbet to triumph on Saturday. Michael Hills won this race last year on Red Clubs, and teams up with his father-trainer Barry again this year. Prime Defender is their chosen ride this year, although Centrebet believe a second consecutive victory for the Hills family is unlikely, and make Prime Defender a massive 50/1 outsider.

BGbet are running a great refund offer at Haydock this weekend.
