Twenty20 Finals Day, Rose Bowl, Hampshire-Live all day Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 11:00am
Twenty20′s phenomenal rise in popularity continues on Saturday as Hampshire’s Rose Bowl plays host to the Twenty20 Cup final’s day, including the final it self at 7pm.Durham, Middlesex, Essex and Kent will battle it out for top honours, but perhaps more importantly this weekend’s two finalists could earn themselves a place in this years Champions League. They will join teams from Australia, South Africa, and of course Chennai and champions Rajasthan from the IPL, in a competition that will be worth an estimated £2.5 million to the winners. This huge incentive has seen county side’s take the Twenty20 cup much more seriously than previous seasons, where it was seen as a bit of “hit and giggle” in between the serious stuff of the County Championship.
In the first semi-final current holders Kent face hard hitting Graham Napier’s Essex team for a place in the final, starting at 11:30am. Kent are already into one domestic final this season, and Rob Key and his men will be aiming for a second against the team they face in the FP trophy final. Kent have been outstanding in one day competitions this year, and showed what they are capable of in their quarter final against Warwickshire. Put in to bat, Kent put on 175, with runs coming throughout the order, and they are rightly favourites for the game at 8/11 with BetWithRed.
Essex will be hoping Graham Napier can continue his outstanding form in this competition, as his powerful hitting have propelled his team to the Rose Bowl, and himself into the England selectors thoughts for this winters 20/20 for $20million game in Antigua. He scored a record 152 off just 58 balls earlier in the competition against Sussex, and he will be the man the Eagles look to blast them to the final. As well as qualifying for the final they will look to use this game as a confidence builder for the FP trophy final against Kent later in the year, but BG rate them as underdogs here at Evens for the match.
Durham take on Middlesex in the second semi-final at 3pm, and it is the team from Chester-le-Street who are 8/13 favourites with BetWithRed for the game, and for the competition outright at 15/8. Following Yorkshire’s disqualification, Durham faced Glamorgan in the quarter-finals, and staked their claims for favouritism by thumping the Dragons. Steve Harmison and Shaun Pollock steamrolled through Glamorgan as they were bowled out for 119 in just 17 overs, 44 runs short of Durham’s 163 haul off their 20 overs. This included a quick fire 51 from 38 balls by Will Smith, as he guided the “Men in Black” through to finals day.
The young guns of Middlesex round out the quarter finalists, with Dawid Malan leading the scoring for the Crusaders. His impressive 103 against a Freddie Flintoff inspired Lancashire bought him praise from many corners, including the big Preston born fast bowler. Middlesex desperately needed that score when Malan came to the crease, as they were teetering on 21-4 and many expected Flintoff, Cork and co. to overpower the Middlesex youngsters. Malan, however, had other ideas and they will be a team full of enthusiasm and excitement at the Rose Bowl, despite being the 6/5 outsiders in the match with BGbet.
Challenge Cup Semi-Finals, Live on Saturday and Sunday, BBC
The Challenge Cup reaches its semi-final stage this weekend as Leeds Rhinos play St. Helens on Saturday at 12.10pm (BBC1), while Wakefield Wildcats face Hull FC at 3:10pm on Sunday (BBC2).
The top two in the Super League meet in Huddersfield on Saturday, where St. Helens will rightly go into the game as 1/2 favourites with BGbet. Saints are currently on a 15 game unbeaten run, which has included a 54-0 demolition of Harlequins and a 26-12 victory over the Rhino’s a month ago. Leeds will be able to call on the services of Danny McGuire following his disciplinary hearing this week, and will be looking to build on recent form. They have won four of their last six games, including a 46-8 rout of Huddersfield a fortnight ago, to sit atop the Super League alongside Saints. Despite this impressive form they are second favourites at 6/4 with BetWithRed.
Wakefield will be looking to overturn the form books when they meet Hull on Saturday, having lost their last four games. However, with coach John Kear at the helm they can call on his Challenge Cup winning experience with Sheffield Eagles and, ironically, Hull three years ago. Hull will enter the game full of confidence following their crushing 44-18 win over Hull KR in the derby on Monday, a win that followed a 26-18 win over the Wildcats two weeks ago. Hull are 4/9 favourites with BGbet due to their impressive form in the past few games, while Wakefield are 7/4 to gain revenge for that game with BG.
BetWithRed give Wakefield a 6 point start on the handicap at 10/11, while Hull are also 10/11 to overcome that handicap.
