(expired)Weekend Betting Preview 16-17 Aug

This weekend sees the return of the Premiership with a full set of fixtures across Saturday and Sunday. Manchester United already have their first piece of silverware after winning the Charity Shield, but Chelsea are aiming to make that the only trophy United pick up this year. The two favourites for the Premiership title are both in action on Sunday, as Chelsea host Portsmouth, while Man Utd welcome Newcastle for a game that traditionally sees plenty of goals.Arsenal v West Brom, Saturday, Sky Sports1 , 12:45pm

The 2008-09 Premiership season begins in North London as Arsenal take on new boys West Brom.

Following a season without silverware the Gunners will be determined to avoid a repeat this season, although they may have to look to one of the cup competitions to do it. After the departure of Hleb and Flamini, and Emmanuel Adebayor’s unsuccessful attempt to leave, Arsene Wenger has not strengthened as much as anticipated. Tony Mowbray will lead out West Brom for the first time in the Premiership on Saturday, and many neutrals will be looking forward to seeing the team many called the “Arsenal of the Championship”. Mowbray had his team playing a free flowing, attacking style modelled on Arsenal that made them the top scorers in all of English football with 88 goals last season.

Arsenal are 1/5 favourites with BGbet to open their Premiership campaign with a win, and West Brom will be hoping to cause a opening day upset at 11/1 with VCbet.

If Theo Walcott scores at anytime during Arsenal V West Brom, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Sunderland v Liverpool, Saturday, Setanta, 5:30pm

Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres link up for the first time in the Premiership as they face Roy Keane’s new look Sunderland. After securing their Premiership status Sunderland have strengthened with more Premiership experience from Tottenham and El Hadji Diouf from Bolton. Steed Malbranque is one of the players recruited from Tottenham, and the Black Cats will look to him for a creative spark. Keane is Liverpool’s only new addition this summer, and he will be expected to provide some support for Spanish hitman Torres. Following a brilliant first season in England, Torres was part of the Spanish team that finally fulfilled its promise and won Euro 2008, and he will be looking to bring this form into the new season.

Liverpool are clear 4/7 favourites at BGbet, while Centrebet make Sunderland 19/4 underdogs.

If Dirk Kuyt scores at anytime during Sunderland V Liverpool, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Chelsea v Portsmouth, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 1:30pm

“Big Phil” Scolari takes charge of his first competitive game as manager of Chelsea when Portsmouth visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Brazilian replaced Avram Grant in the summer, with many hoping for a return to the flamboyant style of Jose Mourinho. They don’t come much bigger than Scolari, and Roman Abramovich will be hoping he has finally found the man to bring him the Champions League. Following their most successful season in nearly sixty years, Portsmouth enter the season full of optimism, and looking forward to their first ever European campaign. Peter Crouch will begin his second spell at Pompey on Saturday, while the signings of Younes Kaboul and Glen Little has added strength in depth to an already steady defence, which will be needed in the coming months as Harry Redknapp’s side embark on their European travels.

VCbet make Chelsea the 1/3 favourites for the win at Stamford Bridge, and BetWithRed price up Portsmouth at 8/1 to end the Blues’ 82 match unbeaten home record.

If Joe Cole scores at anytime during Chelsea V Portsmouth, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

If Chelsea v Portsmouth finishes 0-0 BGbet will refund all losing correct score bets on that game.¹

Manchester United v Newcastle United, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:00pm

Old Trafford will play host to a double trophy celebration on Sunday as Manchester United parade their tenth Premier League , and third European Cup, before they open the defence of their titles. Alex Ferguson has seen no reason to add to last years impressive squad, and will simply look to his young players to continue their form of last year. After another eventful summer at St. James, Kevin Keegan will be concentrating on the new season and aiming to bring back the attacking style of football that Newcastle were renowned for in his first spell in charge. Despite the turmoil, they have strengthened defensively and will look to Keegan’s famed motivational skills to get them performing.

Man Utd. are big favourites with BetWithRed at 2/7, so accordingly Centrebet make Newcastle massive outsiders at 12/1.

If Ryan Giggs scores at anytime during Manchester United V Newcastle United, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Place a Correct Score bet on any Premier League match this weekend, and if it gets beat by an Injury time goal BGbet will refund all losing correct score bets on that game.¹

Weekend Racing from Ripon, Live on Channel 4, Saturday, 2:00pm

This weekend’s big race is the Great St. Wilfrid Stakes on Saturday from Ripon (4.00pm).

There is a very competitive field in this year’s race, with five horses battling for favourite status. Valery Borzov, Hogmaneigh and Baby Strange are current joint favourites at 7/1 with VCbet, while Knot in Wood and Conquest are close second favourites at 8/1.

Francis Norton was on board Valery Borzov as they won last week at Haydock, the second win for the horse in its last six starts. Baby Strange will be looking to go one better than its last two races, where it has been beaten by a nose when leading in the last 100 yards. Hogmaneigh’s rider Saleem Golam may be encouraged to be more aggressive at the start, as he has narrowly missed out on places following late charges in his last three outings.

BGbet are running a great refund offer at Ripon this weekend.

If your horse is beaten by a short-head or nose in the Great St. Wilfrid Stakes at Ripon, BGbet will refund your losing stake in the form of free bets.3
