Boxing- Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones, Jr. 8th November
It’s off to Madison Square Garden this weekend as the ‘Pride of Wales’ Joe Calzaghe fights in what he claims to be his last bout before retirement. And what a way to go out as he takes on one the all time greats in Roy Jones, Jr. Jones has, not for the first time, come out of retirement for this fight and Calzaghe is favourite at 1/3. However, don’t expect a roll over from arguably the best pound for pound fighter there has ever been!

Premier League Football- Arsenal vs Manchester United 8th November
This Saturday see’s another sure to be epic battle between the two teams who dominated English football over the last decade or so, until one Russian billionaire popped up in West London.

This is the key match up of the weekend and, with Liverpool’s resilience shown this year with victories already over Chelsea and United, both teams will want to win this to stay in touch with the leaders and reaffirm their title credentials.

Sunday brought more success for British sportsmen Lewis Hamilton and Andy Murray, with victories in Shanghai and Madrid respectively and Sky Bet have now opened a book on which of the two young Brits will record more wins in 2009.

2008 has seen Murray rise to 4th in the world rankings and reach his first Grand Slam final and the Scot is 12/5 to win more ATP Tour titles than Lewis Hamilton wins Grands Prix. The McLaren driver has won five races so far this season and is 8/15 favourite to gain more victories on the circuit than Murray does on the ATP tour. The tie is priced at 5/1.

Hamilton is 5/4 favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in December, with Murray quoted at 20/1.

Sky Bet have produced a wide range of additional specials on how Andy Murray will fare in 2009. The British number one is 25/1 to take four or more Masters Series titles, 5/1 to win three and 7/2 to win none.

Betting is also available on which 2009 Masters Series title he will clinch first and Sky Bet make Indian Wells 7/2 favourite, followed by the Miami Masters (4/1).

Wimbledon junior champion Laura Robson plays her first WTA Tour event this week in Luxembourg. The 14-year-old has been drawn against world number 42, Iveta Benesova, in the first round and is and 7/4 to progress to the second round and 4/1 to whitewash the Czechoslovakian 2-0.

Robson is 6/4 to take the first set against Benesova and 8/11 to win a set. Sky Bet are also offering 4/5 for there to be under 9.5 games in the first set, 5/6 to be under 19.5 games in the match and 5/4 for the match to go to three sets.

Sky Bet quote 25/1 for Robson to win Wimbledon before she is 19 and 10/1 for her to win the ladies’ singles in her lifetime.

Andy Murray is back in action in Madrid this week for the first time since he reached the US Open final, losing to Roger Federer. The Swiss ace is a potential semi-final opponent for Murray and Sky Bet quote 5/4 for the two to meet there. With a bye in the first round as the fourth seed, Murray will play Simone Bolelli in round two and is 1/7 to beat the Italian in what will be their first encounter. Murray is 7/1 to win in Madrid, 11/2 to come runner-up and 2/1 to be eliminated in the semi-finals.

Sky Bet are offering odds on how the British number one will fare in the last three big tournaments of 2008. After sweeping aside Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray is 16/1 with Sky Bet to beat world number one, Rafael Nadal, in straight sets in the semi-finals of the US Open. England begin their World Cup qualifying campaign against Andorra in Barcelona on Saturday night in what the traders at Sporting Index expect to be a relative ‘stroll in the park’. It’s not every day of the week you see an away side as the 3.5-3.7 goal favourites, but that’s the position Capello’s England side find themselves in. On paper, they should win easily having recorded decisive 5-0 and 3-0 victories over Andorra the last time they met back in 2006/2007. However, buyers will be conscious that England have a history of struggling against weaker opposition and particularly so in the first 45 minutes. The Three Lions have played 14 competitive games this decade away to teams ranked outside the top 50, with none of the games producing more than one first-half goal.

Sellers of total goals in the game at 3.8 with Sporting Index will take heart from the fact that all of Andorra’s last six games have featured 3 or fewer goals. In fact, since they lost 7-0 in Croatia last October, only one of their thirteen fixtures since has had more than 4.5 goals. Admittedly, they’ve played some equally bad sides in that time, but they have also managed to contain Russia, Israel and England along the way. Looking more generally at recent mismatches (a team ranked in the top 25 away to one outside the top 100) in UEFA qualifying competitions, the big sides have won 53 of the 59 games. The interesting trend for goal sellers is that a sizable majority (36 of those 59) have also featured under 3.5 goals. Those tempted to sell the time of the first Andorra match goal at 81 minutes with Sporting Index should be aware that the hosts have only managed to hit the net in just over a quarter of the 53 competitive matches they have played.
