Motor mouth Russell Brand today emerged as the front runner with bookies Paddy Power to deliver this year’s alternative Christmas message on Channel 4.
The notorious lothario, who earlier this month had a very public falling out with the BBC, after making crank phone calls to veteran actor Andrew Sachs, is the 10/11 favourite with the Irish bookmaker to address the nation on Christmas day.
Brand was initially entered at 4/1 into the betting but his odds were quickly slashed after a flurry of betting activity. The gamble is being attributed to Brands’ success with the second series of his Channel 4 show ‘Russell Brand’s Ponderland’ which is drawing more than 1 million viewers since it aired again on the 30th October.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “When it comes to the ‘Alternative Christmas Message’ Channel 4 are renowned for creating controversy and let’s face it if it’s controversy they want they’ll definitely get it with Brand! Now that Russell’s ties with the BBC have been severed he could be the perfect choice.”
Channel 4 has broadcast an “Alternative Christmas message” since 1993. The speech is delivered in the manner of Her Majesty very often by a famous and sometimes controversial celebrity. Previous orators include Brigitte Bardo in 1995, Ali G in 1999, Sharon Osbourne in 2002 and Marge Simpson in 2004!
With ‘Vote for Eoghan’ Campaigns going on all over the country, and ‘Quiggy Wig’ hair cuts popping up in some of the more fashionable circles, the 16 year old Northern Ireland X-Factor hopeful’s popularity seems to be going from strength to strength.
Paddy Power make Eoghan their second favourite at 11/4 to win the competition, but due to demand the cheeky bookie has opened betting markets in relation to Eoghan’s other talents.
With Quigg’s hedgehog hair getting bigger and bolder each week, the cheeky Irish bookie is keeping an eye on what famous celebrities will follow in his footsteps and ask for a ‘Quiggy wig’ the next time they grace the barber’s chair. Partial to a few outlandish ‘dos’ himself, David Beckham is favourite at 3/1, followed by Eoghan’s mentor Simon Cowell at 16/1 and last year’s judge Sharon Osbourne at 18/1.
Paddy Power is also offering betting on who Eoghan Quigg will date first as rumours of a behind the scenes X-Factor romance continue to circulate. Included in the betting are mentors Dannii Minogue at 33/1 and Cheryl Cole at 20/1, but heading the betting at 1/8 is fellow contestant Diana Vickers.
Both Eoghan and Diana have said ”they’re just good friends”, but if the betting is anything to go by love could be lurking in the air.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “Forget David Beckham! With hundreds of young men queuing up at their local barbers to copy his style it’s obvious Eoghan is the new trend setter in town!”
This Saturday Paddy Power will be offering 10% cashback on all losing Scoop6 bets placed online or via Dial a Bet, there will be no limit applied to the amount refunded on each bet.

It was a busy week for reality TV as John Sergeant bowed out of Strictly Come Dancing and two new celebrities prepared to enter the jungle, amid rumours of a baby Behr down under!
Former TV and radio presenter Timmy Mallett and David Van Day, one half of eighties pop group Dollar, are the newest editions to the celebrity jungle.
On the X Factor front, Diana Vickers remains the hot favourite to win but it’s Eoghan Quigg who all eyes are on. The 16 year old from Derry, whose hedgehog hair has become even more famous than the show itself, is proving hugely popular with the voting public and is this year’s biggest threat in the competition.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “Everybody was disappointed to see John go but his success on Strictly should be viewed as a warning to others that literally anything is possible when the public are voting. Quite often it’s the likeability factor that sees reality TV stars progress further!”
Alistair Darling’s pre-budget speech next Monday will be very different to the one he gave just nine months ago. His claims back in March that “the British economy will continue to grow through this year and beyond” are likely to be replaced with a promise that the UK can, and will, spend their way out of a spiraling recession.
Bookmakers Paddy Power are betting this year’s pre-budget report will include some generous cuts in taxation across the board.
It’s 4/5 with the Irish bookmaker that the standard rate of income tax is reduced while it’s just 6/4 that the old low rate tax band of 10% makes a comeback. Corporation tax is also likely to be reduced from its current rate of 21%, while it’s 2/5 odds-on that the Government will choose to reduce the 12.8% rate of employers’ national insurance contributions.
On a lighter note, Paddy Power are betting on which buzzword the Chancellor will make his own next week. Last March the word ‘Stability’ was the order of the day with Darling using it a total of 23 times in his speech. A lot has happened in the last nine months and ‘Protection’ is the now the 5/1 favourite to be the first word/phrase uttered from the Chancellor’s mouth.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. Those who plan on tuning in to next Monday’s pre-budget speech can also bet on what colour tie the Chancellor will don to how many sips of water he’ll consume, and how quickly he delivers his speech.
Following today’s shock announcement by political journalist John Sergeant to pull out of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, bookies Paddy Power have promised to refund all bets placed on the 64 year old swinger.
Sergeant’s odds had been slashed to 10/1 from as big as 100/1 with Paddy Power to dance his way to victory after receiving a huge surge in support from the public.
The bookie will refund over £8,400 / €10,000 to die-hard Sergeant fans that got behind the British broadcaster to go all the way. He was a massive worry for the bookie who would have had to fork out over £84,000 / €100,000 had he went on to win!
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “It’s very disappointing that Sergeant felt he had no choice but to pull out of Strictly Come Dancing and even more disappointing that the judges have won and got their wish! Our punters will be massively disappointed that Sergeant is out of the game and we just hope our refund will soften the blow.”
Austin Healy remains the red hot favourite at even money to dance his way to victory, while model Jodie Kidd is the 4/6 odds-on favourite to get the chop on Sunday.
Paddy Power will refund all losing bets on Munster following their agonisingly close encounter with the mighty All Blacks.
The Munster faithful had backed their team at odds as big as 10/1 before kick off, and as short as 8/11 just before the killer blow – the All Blacks were hot 1/33 favourites at the start.
Paddy Power will refund just shy of €40,000 which was bet on an unlikely Munster victory.
Paddy Power said, “It was gut-wrenching. Anyone who backed Munster didn’t care about the money, it was all about the win – and you don’t get much closer than that. Hopefully getting their money back will help put a smile back on their proud faces – I wonder what those Munster lads are doing on Saturday afternoon!”
Following recent comments from FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney, that we are “owed” a soccer match against England, bookies Paddy Power have released betting on when this ultimate grudge fixture will take place. Memories of Bloody Sunday make a Croke Park meeting for the two sides unlikely at best which is reflected in Paddy Power’s odds of 20/1.
With the newly developed Lansdowne Stadium set to open its gates for the first time in August 2010 and qualifiers for the Euro 2012 Championships beginning the following month, Paddy Power make a 2010 meeting much more likely at 7/4 with 2011 a slightly bigger 10/3 shot. However, the bookies make an encounter in 2012 or later their odds-on 10/11 favourite.
Paddy Power said “The likelihood of a soccer international against England taking place in Croke Park is just about as likely as Roy Keane turning up as their captain on the day but surprisingly some punters are nibbling at the 20/1 available”
