We have a fantastic weekend of summer sport for you this weekend, with finals day in cricket’s Twenty20 cup, the semi finals of rugby league’s Challenge Cup, and great day of racing from Ascot.
Weekend Racing from Ascot-Live on Saturday, BBC2, 2:15pm
The weekends’ racing takes us to Ascot, and the big race is the seven furlong Totesport International Handicap at 3:40pm. Redford and Lovelace are battling it out for favouritism, and are both 5/1 with BetWithRed, while second favourite is Musaalem at 7/1. Redford is in an impressive run of form, having won three of his last five starts, while Lovelace has finished first and second respectively in his last two races. (more…)
A fairly quiet period of sporting action now until the Olympics kicks off, closely followed by the start of the football season. We’ll look in more detail at the Olympics next week when the spreads are released, but I’m sure there will be plenty of you looking to get your teeth into some pre-season football spread markets. According to Sporting Index, it looks like this season will be another tight battle between Man United (season points spread: 82.5-84) and Chelsea (82-83.5) for the title, whilst Arsenal (75-76.5) and Liverpool (74-75.5) look destined to fight it out for third and fourth. Those who fancy any of the top four to win the league will be pleased to hear that three of the past five champions have won with a final points tally of 90 or bigger. However, buyers of United in the points index might be slightly concerned that their last four titles have been with a points tally of 87, 89, 83 and 80. Chelsea buyers will take heart from their team’s recent two winning seasons earning 91 and 95 points; whilst they have failed to register less than 80 points in the Abramovich era. (more…)
The Open will be well underway now, but with literally hundreds of in-running spread markets, there are plenty more opportunities to follow your judgement over the weekend. Prior to the tournament, Sporting Index had the winning margin spread at 1.6-1.9, so sellers will be pleased to hear that five of the last 10 Open Championships have gone to a play-off, including the last one played here at Royal Birkdale in 1998. The course is regarded as one of the best and toughest in the world, so there will be plenty of punter interest in the winning score market. The spread was set pre-tournament at 276-277, which suggests we are in for a similar renewal to last year (Garcia and Harrington were tied at 7 under after 277 shots). Sellers will be delighted to hear that five of the last eight winners have posted scores lower than 276, but before you start to scream “sell, sell”, be warned that three of those victories were by a certain Mr Woods. When Mark O’Meara won here in 1998, he won at level-par, having played 280 shots for the 72 holes, whilst buyers will be praying for a repeat of the infamous Lawrie-Van de Velde battle at Carnoustie a year later, when the Scot eventually won in a play-off, with a 6 over par score of 290. The world’s greatest golfer might not be at Royal Birkdale for The British Open but there is still a top class field heading for Merseyside. The withdrawal of Tiger Woods makes it one of the most wide open Majors in recent years. Sergio Garcia is Boylesports market leader at 10/1 with the Spaniard looking to banish the memories of Carnoustie 12 months ago. However, challenges may come from Ernie Els 14/1 and Defending Champion Padraig Harrington at 20/1.
Boylesports are offering ¼ odds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 for The Open as well as a fantastic special for the third major of the season:
A MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Forget the Joy of Six – Paddy Power is offering a Magnificent SEVEN places on this year’s Open Championship.
Despite the absence of Tiger Woods and golfers lining up at Royal Birkdale for one of the most open Opens in years Paddy Power will pay out on each way bets for the first seven golfers.
Paddy Power, spokesman for the bookie, said: “Punters can go to the first tee with one of Paddy Power’s most generous golf specials ever. We led the down the betting fairway with six places but seven places will once again leave the other bookies bunkered.”
This year’s Open Championship takes place at Royal Birkdale on the Lancashire coastline where the world’s finest golfers will be lining up to claim the third major of the golfing year. Sportingbet claim they have got the best odds on this great event. Why not open an account with them? They have £150 worth of Free Bets available if you get started now. Of course there is one major absentee this year and that is world number 1 Tiger Woods. The great man aggravated his dodgy knee while winning the US Open last month and he’s out for the rest of the season, which means we have the most open Open of the decade! With Tiger out the way who can grab the initiative and lift the Claret Jug? Let’s have a look at some of the big contenders… (more…)
