Following the failure today of the much hyped North Korean long-range rocket to make it into orbit, top betting firm Paddy Power are taking bets on the outcome of the next launch attempt by the hermit state.
According to the bookies odds, it looks likely that rookie Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un may be hiding his blushes for a second time with odds of 4/6 that the next launch will also fail to make orbit.
Paddy Power are also taking bets on when the next rocket launch will take place with very likely odds of 1/2 available on a second attempt this year. For those who like backing long-shots, the 500/1 on offer for the next North Korean rocket to be piloted by the Supreme Leader himself may prove tempting.
Paddy Power said “I’d say Mission Control in North Korea is a very lonely place tonight but according to our odds it’s likely to be action stations again in no time!” (more…)
With the news that An Taoiseach Brian Cowen has been included in a list of the top ten world leaders by Newsweek magazine, Paddy Power are taking bets on what honour will next be afforded to Offaly’s finest son.
Its 20/1 for Brian Cowen to be granted the freedom of his native county Offaly and 50/1 for a statue in his honour to be erected on Dublin’s O’Connell Street.
Leveraging his recent international profile Paddy Power make it just 3/1 for the Taoiseach to guest lecture at Harvard Business School and 10/1 to appear on the cover of Time Magazine.
Other potential accolades on the bookies shortlist include an appointment as President of the Vintners Federation of Ireland at 100/1, an appearance on Dragons Den at 200/1, and Brian Cowen Day becoming a national holiday at 250/1.
Paddy Power said “It seems that the Taoiseach has the world at his feet so we’re happy to raise to a glass to his future achievements” (more…)
Former Irish President Mary Robinson could be amongst those nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize this year.
Paddy Power have installed Mary at 12/1 to pip the likes of Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo and Vietnamese monk Thich Quang Do to the post and win the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
It’s not clear whether Ireland’s first female President has even been nominated but there have been one or two price requests from optimistic punters. And looking at Mrs Robinson’s CV she’s certainly not lost amongst the contenders.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, explains: “Mary Robinson’s previous work with the UN would have stood to her when it came to being considered for nomination as would her continued work with GAVI Alliance and her latest project Realizing Rights. She’s received two notable peace prizes in the past and last year received a Presidential medal of freedom in the US so really she’s got Nobel form.”
According to organisers, a record 237 people and organizations have been nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, with interest boosted by last year’s somewhat controversial award to President Barack Obama. The 2010 winner will be announced in Oslo in mid-October. (more…)
Former Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean is being tipped to become the new President of his native Haiti after finally confirming his intention to run in the leadership race later this year.
The Haitian-American rapper will make the big announcement exclusively on CNN’s “Larry King Live” tomorrow night and Paddy Power have already made him their 7/4 favourite to succeed current President Rene Preval.
Wyclef Jean, who is so far the only candidate to have thrown his hat in the ring for the five-year term in office, will stand as part of a coalition calling itself Ansanm Nou Fo, meaning “together we are strong”.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “Wyclef has a fantastic chance. He’s already hugely popular in his homeland and has gone to great lengths to secure international aid since the disastrous earthquake in January.”
Paddy Power have also opened betting on what % of the vote will go to Wyclef. It’s just 5/2 he receives over 50% of the public vote when they take to the polls on November 28. (more…)
New Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has put the Labor Party firmly back in the running to emerge victorious at the upcoming General Election.
Gillard became Australia’s first female Prime Minister on Thursday after incumbent Kevin Rudd stood aside in a party vote amid plunging approval ratings and party unrest.
Paddy Power have now slashed the odds on Labor topping the polls from 2/5 to 1/4 in a General Election scheduled for October of this year.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “Things were looking touch and go for a while but the fact Rudd jumped before he was pushed as well as a lot of positive reaction to the new PM has put Labor back in the lead to pull back some much needed support at the polls.” (more…)
