Paddy Power reports that, up to this stage of the Championships, one in three punters have backed Murray to win Wimbledon – a figure surely set to only increase should he beat Andy Roddick on Friday. Murray is currently 5/2 to go all the way at SW19.
The bookie is offering odds of just 3/10 that Murray wins his semi-final against big serving American Andy Roddick with Murray 13/8 to repeat the straight sets victory he enjoyed in the Quarter Finals. However its 9/2 the Scottish ace comes through victorious in another nail-biting five set thriller.
Roddick himself is 12/5 to win the match and 7/1 for a 3-2 win.
Paddy Power said: “One in three is a staggering level of support, especially when the greatest player of all time Roger Federer is still in the mix and looking in imperious form.”
In the other semi-final Federer is, not surprisingly, hot favourite to win at 1/12 and 8/13 to win in straight sets. Tommy Haas is 6/1 to cause an upset.

Should you be expecting an upset at SW19 tomorrow, bookie Paddy Power is offering 17/1 that Russians Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva beat the seemingly unstoppable Williams sisters at Wimbledon.
When in the form that Serena and Venus have been in the last two weeks there are very few players that can topple them and that is reflected in the semi-final betting with Venus and Serena just 15/8 to win both their matches in straight sets.
Venus is 2/9 to win her match against world number one Safina whilst Serena is just 1/5 with Paddy Power to knockout Dementieva.
However the bookie can’t split the Williams sisters in the outright betting, making both Serena and Venus 11/10 to win the Venus Rosewater Dish. Safina, who has yet to win a Grand Slam despite her world number one status, is 9/1 with Dementieva the 12/1 outsider.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “No woman seems able to come close to toppling the Williams sisters at SW19 – and the two Russians they are facing in the semi-finals certainly both have question marks over their bottle to rise to such a big occasion.” (more…)
Andy Murray, who is now 5/2 to win Wimbledon, has been eased out slightly in the betting by Paddy Power following last night’s war against Wawrinka. However the bookie has responded to the rousing win by cutting the odds in the betting on Murray’s “Britishness”.
Murray had been as short as 15/8 to win his first Grand Slam title before the Wawrinka marathon although the British ace had been as big as 11/4 for the Wimbledon crown during the indoor struggle last night.
Having overcome the obstacle Murray is now 4/7 to reach his first SW19 final and just 1/16 to beat former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero in the Quarter Finals. It’s 4/6 for a Murray straight sets win and 8/1 for another five set marathon in Murray’s favour. Paddy Power are also betting on how many more sets Murray plays at Wimbledon this year, making eleven and twelve sets the 4/1 joint-favourite.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Andymonium appears to be in full effect with all the patriotic punters continuing to back the Brit. Despite the Wawrinka wobble, they’re still backing him to go all the way, to make the final and to have a much more convincing win against Ferrero than he managed under the roof last night.”
Whilst the world number three continues to attract the once a year British tennis punters, the biggest bet at Paddy Power for Murray to win Wimbledon so far is £5000 at 3/1.
Marathon Win Underlines Murray’s Britishness
Paddy Power has also cut the odds for Andy Murray to finish the tournament as “95% British” to 15/8. Based on the votes at independent website andymurrayometer.com the five set thriller on Monday night as well as the primetime BBC1 coverage will have hugely helped Murray’s credentials as being seen as British rather than Scottish.
Darren Haines said: “To be considered a True Brit a five set thriller is just what Andy Murray needed to win the hearts of the home counties. After all, every other match Tim Henman played at Wimbledon seemed to be an emotional roller-coaster and it did him no harm in winning their affections.”

The oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world is underway now. Andy Murray will attempt to do what no Brit has done for 73 years, win Wimbledon! Stan James‘ traders have come up with some cracking specials for Wimbledon including Enhanced Accumulator’s and How Many Sets Will Murray Win/Lose?
The odds on Andy Murray winning Wimbledon have come in to 9/4 following champion Rafa Nadal’s injury withdrawal today.
Paddy Power responded to the defending champions injury withdrawal today but cutting Murray’s odds from 3/1 with the second favourite only likely to attract even more money from the patriotic punt with his half of the draw now seemingly wide open for a run to the final.
The patriotic punt on Murray could see a nationwide gamble on the Brit in the region of £6million. So far Paddy Power has taken three times more bets on Murray than the next player – a significant number when the next player is all time great and five time champion Roger Federer.
Federer himself remains favourite with the all-time great now 8/11 from Evens for a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title with a Federer-Murray final 7/4.
Murray is just 1/33 to win his first round match on Monday and 3/10 for a straight sets victory.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Nadal’s withdrawal has a greater impact on Murray than Federer and if we weren’t seeing a big enough patriotic punt before than it’s going to go into overdrive now.”
Wimbledon Specials
Elsewhere Paddy Power are betting on Andy Murray’s ‘Britishness’ as according to the public vote on website www.andymurrayometer.com . British when he wins, Scottish when he doesn’t Paddy Power are offering 9/4 that Murray is 91-95% British by the end of Wimbledon whilst it is 25/1 he is less than 10% British (or 90% Scottish).
The bookie is also betting on how many days of the tournament Centre Court’s new roof is called into action with three days of activity deemed as likely as the roof not being used at all at 3/1.
Ladies Betting
In the Ladies singles the the Williams sisters Serena and Venus are the favourites at 9/4 and 10/3 respectively followed by world number 59 Maria Sharapova at 8/1. Last year’s junior champion Laura Robson is a 250/1 to emulate Virgina Wade and 28/1 to make it to the second week. A Serena-Venus final is 8/1.
Paddy Power is offering live internet streaming of every Wimbledon match on its website. (more…)
Last year we were spolied with the greatest final of all time on Centre Court as two of the games greatest names in the sport played out a thriller! Nadal eventually got the better of Federer on that day, but whose name is on the trophy this year? Can Roger maintain his terrific current form and regain the crown? Is Rafa’s knee able to hold up and allow him to defend his title successfully or will Andy Murray end Britains 73 year wait and walk away as the Wimbledon 2009 Men’s Champion?
In terms of the Ladies competition, will it be the Williams sisters leading the way again? Can Dinara Safina recover from a disastrous French Open Final and reign supreme? Will Maria Sharapova be wearing her pink undies?

Tennis: Wimbledon: 22nd June – 5th July
Strawberries and cream anyone? Yes, it’s that time of year again. Tennis fever sweeps the nation as Murray, Federer, Sharapova and co return to SW19 on June 22. All eyes will be on young Scot Andy Murray who has had a fantastic year since being knocked out last year by eventual champion Rafa Nadael and is 3/1 to win his first grand slam tournament at Wimbledon.
Bookie Paddy Power has installed Roger Federer as the 5/4 favourite to win Wimbledon – the first time the legendary Swiss ace has been favourite to win SW19 since January.
Federer and Nadal had been installed as 13/8 joint favourites for Wimbledon after their epic final 12 months ago before Nadal became market leader when winning the Australian Open.
The new French Open champion cemented his place in history today by completing his collection of the four Grand Slams and equalling Sampras’ all time major record and the win saw Federer’s odds to win Wimbledon come in from 2/1 second favourite with Paddy Power prior to the Roland Garros tournament.
Nadal is second favourite to win Wimbledon at 7/2 with Andy Murray the same price. Federer’s opponent today Robin Soderling is 33/1 from 150/1 two weeks ago.
