As well as the British Lions tour, The Ashes and Wimbledon, there is plenty of sporting action to get your teeth into this summer. The football season is coming to an end with Manchester United looking to secure a Premier League and Champions League double as well as the FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Everton. Fabio Capello will be hoping to take a giant step towards next summer’s World Cup Finals when England face Kazakhstan (6th June) and Andorra (10th June). Tiger Woods will be looking to win his first major since coming back from injury when he takes part in the US Open (18th June – 21st June) before The Open from Turnberry (16th July –19th July). In the world of Racing, we have the Vodafone Derby (6th June) as well as major meetings at Royal Ascot (16th June – 20th June) and Glorious Goodwood (28th July – 1st August). And finally, Jenson Button will be looking to extend his formidable lead in Formula One with the highlight race being the British Grand Prix (21st June) from Silverstone for the final time.

In just over a week’s time the Prestbury Park gates swing open as the greatest show on turf gets underway. For those of you that can’t wait for this year’s Cheltenham Festival… Well, you’ll just have to!
Don’t fret though, there’s plenty of quality action to get involved with this weekend with a selection of races at Newbury (2.05, 2.35, 3.10, 3.45pm) Doncaster (3.25pm) and Kempton (2.20, 2.50pm) all live on Channel 4.
In the race of the day, the 3.10pm Newbury, Paul Nicholls holds a very strong hand with Natal, Mr Pointment and New Little Bric all lining up. With a large field expected to go to post, even with three runners it won’t be easy for the Ditcheat trainer to bag the winner. Before that, Fundamentalist and Bob Bob Bobbin are familiar names in the veterans race at 2.35pm whilst in the 3.30pm Dishdasha returns over hurdles after a successful spell on the all-weather.
Kempton hosts two competitive handicaps over hurdles and fences, whilst up at Doncaster, they’ve gone for quality and not quantity as just one race is shown on Channel 4. What a cracker it is though with Grand National winner Comply or Die the star of the show. Can David Pipe’s Aintree hero run a solid race even if his ultimate target is of course his Grand National defence in early April?
Whichever choices you make this Saturday, here’s an offer to help you in your quest for profit…

This year’s Australian Open is just around the corner and Sportingbet are on the case with all the odds for the opening Grand Slam of the season. Looking at the Outright market one thing stands out straight away, Andy Murray has officially moved up alongside the ‘Big 3’ players of world tennis and therefore created a ‘Big 4’. Not only that, but he’s a shorter price for outright glory than two of them!
Three time winner Roger Federer remains 5/2 favourite at the head of Sportingbet’s market, with the enigmatic Scotsman just a shade behind him at 11/4.
So where are Nadal and Djokovic? Well, obviously not too far away, but both can be backed at 7/2 for 2009 glory in Melbourne. If you think that Djokovic can repeat last year’s win or if Nadal can raise his game on his least favourite, hardcourt surface, then it certainly looks a fair price.
So what about the others? Is there really such a vast gulf in quality that we can consider just 4 players as potential winners of this year’s Australian Open?
Almost, but not quite.
There’s often an unexpected name in the latter stages of these big tournaments and last year was no different as Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, battled his way past most of the big names only to be undone by an in-form Djokovic in the final. He can be backed at 16/1 for this year’s tournament with 2008’s big improver, Juan Marin Del Potro at 20/1. Below that it’s the sometimes mercurial David Nalbandian at 33/1 with Gael Monfils at the same price. For US fans, if you think this is the year that the power of Andy Roddick could win the day, 50/1 is your reward! (more…)
Will Lewis Hamilton dominate the F1 season? 5/1 is on offer if he can get on the podium in every race! It’s 5/2 that he ends the season with the most wins. In MotoGP, Stoner, Rossi, Pedrosa and Lorenzo will be battling it out, with Stoner again favourite to sweep all before him. (more…)
On the International football front, do you think England will win all their remaining World Cup qualifiers at 9/2? Or that Wayne Rooney could start a game as England captain at 14/1?
Could 2009 see the long awaited introduction of goal line technology into the beautiful game? It’s 4/1 that the powers that be will yield to the pressure of managers up and down the country. Talking of managers will Fergie and Wenger still be at the helms of their respective clubs when we welcome in 2010? We also go 10/1 that a team can stay unbeaten in the Premier League for the whole of the year. (more…)
The 2008 golfing year was dominated by the absence of Tiger Woods and the huge success of Padraig Harrington. The legendary Woods watched from the sidelines as the Irishman clinched a second successive Open championship and a US PGA in August. Before Tiger’s injury he put up a heroic performance at the US Open to win from Rocca Mediate. But when will the great man return in 2009? (more…)
Another year of horse racing has come and gone and what a fabulous year it was too with Paul Nicholls and Aidan O’Brien dominating their respective codes. Denman and Master Minded were two high profile names in the National Hunt ranks whilst on the Flat, Jim Bolger’s New Approach was one of the many stars. The fascinating duals between Henrythenavigator and Ravens Pass will also stick long in the memory. (more…)
