The 2012 Olympics opening ceremony is now just 400 days away and Sky Bet has marked the occasion by launching our Team GB markets.
We are offering 400/1 that Team GB claim a clean sweep of gold, silver and bronze in the women’s 400 metres which features Christine Ohuruogu, one of our gold medal heroes from the Beijing games in 2008. She is 14/1 to repeat her success.
Meanwhile another golden girl of British athletics, Jessica Ennis, is 11/10 to win Heptathlon gold.
In other 2012 Olympics markets released today, Rebecca Adlington, who won two gold medals in Beijing, leads the field to strike gold for Team GB in London. She is 4/7 to win the 400 metres freestyle.
Other Brits strongly fancied to repeat their Beijing glory are cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who is a 6/4 chance to win the women’s individual sprint and Sir Chris Hoy who is 9/4 to be part of a winning men’s sprint team and the same price to retain his men’s individual sprint title. Mark Cavendish is 5/2 to win the men’s road race.
The Great Britain football are an 8/1 chance to win gold, while Andy Murray is 11/2 to win the men’s singles title behind 7/4 favourite Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer 5/2.
Back in the Olympic Stadium we offer 11/4 for Phillips Idowu to win the triple jump and 10/1 for Jenny Meadows to win 800 metres gold.
Sky Bet’s Olympics trader Craig Ibbotson said: “As spectators find out which tickets they have been allocated we are offering them a chance to get an early bet on Team GB.
“Olympics fever is starting right now and we are looking forward to offering a great betting service for what is certain to be the biggest sporting event ever held in this country.”
Paddy Power have lost their legal battle with Monmouthshire County Council and have been forced to dismantle their giant billboard from a site beside Celtic Manor Golf Course.
The 270ft Paddy Power promotional sign overlooking the Ryder Cup venue landed the bookmaker in Cardiff County Court at noon today to fight an injunction brought by the local council to have the sign removed.
Paddy Power himself was present in court today in a bid to defend his giant structure, the biggest freestanding sign in the world. However, despite an energetic defence by the bookie the Court ruled in favour of Monmouthshire County Council.
Paddy Power himself said “We are clearly the victims of bureaucratic bullies and rich golf course owners but we will respect the verdict of the court. Monmouthshire County Council’s tactic of parking a bulldozer beside the sign this morning was quite threatening but we’re happy that the Court has let common sense prevail and allowed us three days to remove the sign safely”
Unperturbed by today’s decision Paddy Power are now taking bets on where the giant billboard will next appear with the London Olympics emerging as the early 2/1 favourite. Less likely but also on the bookies shortlist is Celtic Manor Golf Course owner, Terry Matthews, at 500/1. (more…)
Today marks the two year to go mark for the 2012 Olympics and Paddy Power has tipped pop giants Take That to be asked to provide the theme tune that will become the recognized music of the London Games. As one of the UK’s most popular bands enjoying their renaissance and buoyed further by the rejoining of Robbie Williams, Paddy Power quotes them as the 2/1 favourites.
X-factor winner Leona Lewis who performed as part of London’s part of the closing ceremony is the second favourite at 3/1 and it’s also no surprise to see Heather Small at 10/1, who’s past song “Proud” has become synonymous with the games and Team GB.
Some more unlikely bets though are a reunion of Oasis at 66/1, the Spice Girls 80/1 or if they really can’t get anyone Jedwood 100/1 and Katie Price at 500/1.
Roberto Coladangelo spokesman for Paddy Power said; “Every Olympics has a theme tune to the games and with Britain’s rich music history the organising committee will be under serious pressure to not mess up the selection. The reaction to the controversial logo and mascots was mixed to say the least, so there is no doubt the band and song selection will get the same amount of attention!” (more…)
Sky Bet make David Beckham 20/1 to play at the 2012 Olympics and 66/1 to play at any point during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil following comments from the midfielder that he would love the opportunity to extend his England career.
Sky Bet’s Tim Reynolds said: “After witnessing England’s embarrassing performance in South Africa it’s not surprising that Beckham thinks he can still do a job for England but with his age and recent injury woes, it will be hard to see him playing back at the top level.” (more…)
Rio was the surprise result of today’s 2016 Olympic Games announcement with bookies and pundits alike predominantly predicting a win for Chicago.
Paddy Power had Rio as their 7/4 second favourite in the final 48 hours, although the city had been as big as 16/1 when the bookie opened its betting in July 2005. Notable however, Rio attracted more bets than any other of the three other candidate cities in the final 24 hours before voting.
By the time of the final vote on Friday afternoon between Rio and Madrid the Brazilian city was the 1/4 favourite with Madrid 5/2.
Chicago had long been the bookie’s favourite with the Windy City the odds on market leader for several weeks. However just as for the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2012 games, the IOC sprung a surprise that went against the city that was the hot favourite. Chicago was the 8/15 favourite going into today’s vote before falling at the first hurdle.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Once again the IOC has gone against the betting favourite for an Olympic city – such a tag could become a poisoned chalice that no candidate city will want in the future. As for Rio plenty of shrewdies came in for the Brazilian city in the last 24 hours as the strength of being South America’s first Olympic Games really began to carry some momentum.”
Paddy Power are now offering 3/1 that football mad Brazil wins Olympic gold in the Men’s football at the 2016 Games and 10/1 that they win both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, both of which will now be held in the country.
Brazil Betting
3/1 Brazil to win gold in 2016 Olympics men’s football
10/1 Brazil to win 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics men’s football
Schoolboy sensation Clovis Asong has turned the heads of athletics chiefs and punters alike.
The aspiring athlete, who knocked a second off the British under 15 record in only his second 400 metre race has already been billed as the UK’s Usain Bolt and now Paddy Power are betting on the wonderkid’s future in the sport. The bookie is offering 16/1 that Clovis represents Great Britain in the 2016 Olympics, whilst it’s 100/1 he wins the 400m gold in seven years time.
Paddy Power are also offering 500/1 that Clovis one day breaks the 400 metre world record.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “We’ve seen punters collecting long term bets in the past on a young Lewis Hamilton one day becoming F1 champion and a schoolboy Chris Kirkland playing football for England – punters will be rolling in Clovis if these bets come home in the future.” (more…)
Great Britain are favourites to win Olympics Rugby Sevens gold after the sport was admitted into the 2016 programme today.
Bookie Paddy Power has installed GB as the 9/4 favourites ahead of New Zealand at 11/4 and Fiji at 10/3. Whilst the Kiwis and Fijians have long been associated with Sevens glory, the current strength of the Welsh and English teams looks to give GB an early edge when combined into one team along with the Scots.
Current world champions in the full fifteen-a-side format, South Africa, are 7/2 with Ireland at 66/1.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Wales and England are arguably the dominant teams in world Sevens at the moment. When combined they’re likely to take some stopping.”
Meanwhile Tiger Woods is 3/1 to win golf gold in 2016 after his sport was re-entered into the Olympics by the IOC executive board. (more…)
The decision on whether or not women’s boxing will be allowed in the 2012 Olympics is expected to be made this week and the odds are looking good with Paddy Power quoting 1/10 that the girls will get the go ahead for London.
That will leave Ireland in an excellent position to bring home gold at the 2012 games with World Champion Katie Taylor a virtual shoo-in to win a gold medal at odds of 1/8.
Bookies Paddy Power are quoting 4/7 that Taylor will bring home Ireland’s only gold medal in three years time. Separately, Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan is 20/1 to win gold while it’s 25/1 that the pair pull off a double gold victory.
Paddy Power said: “It’s looking good for the girls to get the go ahead and it’s great Katie Taylor will get a chance to shine on the biggest stage. Come to think of it it’s great for Ireland too that we already look to have a gold medal in the bag!” (more…)
Paddy Power have given seventeen-year-old Grainne Murphy a 2/1 chance of bringing home a medal from the European Swimming Championships in Hungary following an impressive heat in the 800m freestyle.
The Wexford swimmer not only smashed the Irish 800m freestyle record by shaving eight seconds off the time to record just 8:28:91 on the clock, but she was also the fastest qualifier for Thursday nights final.
Despite her impressive performance however, the odds on the three-time junior gold medallist bringing home gold are still pretty big with Paddy Power quoting 16/1.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power explained: “Grainne should be over the moon with a new Irish record but the final will be a lot tougher when she comes up against the likes of world record holder Rebecca Adlington, world champion Lotte Friss and Federica Pellegrini, the women’s 200m and 400m freestyle world record holder.
It is important to remember though that she’s only seventeen so there’s no doubt whatsoever that she has a bright future ahead of her. The odds on Grainne winning gold at the 2012 Olympic Games look better again at 8/1.” (more…)
As football catches its breath after the World Cup, players and managers alike will return their attention to their everyday jobs. But with a number of major issues yet to be resolved could the next week see some epic sagas finally being put to bed? Paddy Power has the latest betting.
The Fabregas tug-of-war continues between Arsenal and Barcelona. He’s already appeared in a Barca shirt once, during Spain’s World Cup celebrations, but will Cesc be wearing the shirt again on the first day of the new season or still be turning out in Arsenal colours?
Fabregas or Fabre-gone? Where will Cesc be on the first day of the new season?
4/7 Arsenal
6/4 Barcelona
David Beckham has expressed a desire to play for Great Britain when the 2012 Olympics come to “his manor” in East London. But will the 35 year old’s legs last that long? It’s surely a question that won’t concern Olympics chiefs too much if they can roll out old Becks onto an Olympic pitch.

9/2 David Beckham to play in the Olympics for Great Britain
Joe Cole’s future remains a mystery and Paddy Power bet on where the England midfielder will go next.
