Paddy Power are betting that construction on Dublin’s Metro North will begin on schedule next year.
Work to build the controversial rail line linking St Stephen’s Green to Dublin airport is still awaiting the green light from An Bord Pleanála however Paddy Power are offering odds of 8/11 that the project will commence as planned between April and June 2011.
The bookmaker is also taking bets on the completion date for Metro North making 2016 their 11/10 favourite ahead of 2017 at 7/4. An ‘ahead of schedule’ completion of 2015 or earlier is considered less likely at odds of 3/1. In terms of the final cost of the project Paddy Power make somewhere between €5 billion and €6 billion the most likely outcome at odds of 15/8.
Paddy Power said “With no shortage of snipers in the long grass already taking pot shots at Metro North we’re betting that the Railway Procurement Agency will go the extra mile to deliver this infrastructure on time and on budget” (more…)
Mary Upton’s exit from the political arena yesterday brings to three the total of women who have decided not to contest the next General Election and of course means one less woman in Irish politics.
Earlier this month Labour Party TD Liz McManus and FG TD Olwyn Enright announced that they would not be pursuing re-election at the next election.
With only 13% of the current Dáil deputies made up by females Paddy Power have opened betting on whether this somewhat unbalanced trend continues.
According to Paddy Power female representation is tipped to improve over the coming months. It’s just 2/1 that the number of female TD’s after the next election will rise to between 24 and 27 from 23 and just 9/2 that the number could increase to 30. A total of four women are tipped to be included in the next Cabinet at odds of 7/4.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “I for one am getting tired of testosterone fuelled Irish politics. The good news however is, with an election still a while away there is time to improve on the dwindling numbers of women in Kildare Street!” (more…)
With just two days to go until decision time Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea is closing in on the bookies favourite Tom Elliott to become the next UUP leader.
The fifty-year-old Donegal man has closed what was a significant gap in the betting and is now 15/8 to succeed Sir Reg Empey.
Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Elliott, who represents the more traditional wing of the party, is still the 4/11 favourite but McCrea appears to be gaining momentum as d-day draws near.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “It did look to be very clear cut at one point with Elliott as short as 1/5 but McCrea’s pledges appear to have struck a chord, with our bettors at least, and this leadership race is now too close to call.” (more…)
The search for Ireland’s Greatest Ever Person has been narrowed down to just five finalists and of the five well known names Paddy Power make Corkman Michael Collins, also known as ‘The Big Fellow’, their 4/6 favourite to win.
Voting has been open to the public since March of this year and a list of forty initial candidates were whittled down over time.
Second favourite in the betting to be crowned Ireland’s Greatest is Ireland’s first ever female President and UN High Commissioner Mary Robinson at 11/4. Hot on her heels is U2 frontman Bono at 5/1 followed by former SDLP leader John Hume at 8/1 and Irish rebel James Connolly also at 8/1.
RTE will broadcast five hour long documentaries for each finalist and the public will once again be given the chance to vote for the person they think is Ireland’s Greatest.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “If the betting is anything to go by Michael Collins has this one in the bag. There’s no doubt about it all five will go down in history as Ireland’s Greatest but Collins seems to be the people’s Number 1 choice. Despite John Hume’s outside odds of 8/1 he too is well supported after the part he played in the Northern Ireland peace process.” (more…)
British Airways, who have recently merged with Iberia Airlines, are the 11/8 favourites to takeover former State airline Aer Lingus.
The new partnership which is operating under a holding company called International Airlines Group (IAG) is thought to be circling Aer Lingus to complement its services by feeding Irish passengers through to their long haul network at Heathrow and other British airports.
Low fare airline Ryanair, who owns a 29 per cent stake in Aer Lingus, is considered a rank outsider and unlikely candidate at 20/1 to make a further bid, due to competition regulations and a now uncompetitive share price.
Other airlines that may or may not show an interest in the Irish governments 25 per cent stake in Aer Lingus include EasyJet at 7/2 on Paddy Power’s list, Monarch at 6/1 and KLM also at 6/1 (more…)
On the back of research published today into Irish attitudes towards sex, sin and society which indicates a more liberal view by Irish people towards sexual orientation, leading betting firm Paddy Power are now taking bets on which Irish post will be next held by an openly gay individual.
The President of Ireland tops the bookies list at odds of 4/1 driven in part by colourful Senator David Norris joining Fergus Finlay today as Paddy Power’s joint favourite to become the next Irish head of state.
Editor of an Irish broadsheet newspaper or RTE News anchor are both considered 9/2 shots by Paddy Power who themselves are no strangers to ‘Gay Ireland’ having recently helped bring the Gay Rugby World Cup to these shores.
Less likely posts according to the bookmakers odds include Minister of Defence at 8/1, GAA President at 20/1 and Archbishop of Dublin at 1,000/1.
Paddy Power said “An openly gay Irish President is obviously the most likely outcome for this betting scenario but a gay GAA President certainly has a nice ring to it”
Paddy Power are also taking bets on the first Irish gay celebrity to get married in Ireland and make Westlife crooner Mark Feehily the 2/1 favourite having recently announced his engagement to long-term partner Kevin McDaid.
Comedian and television presenter Brendan Courtney is the 5/1 second favourite ahead of former university lecturer and current next Irish President joint-favourite David Norris at 6/1. (more…)
Paddy Power have today slashed the odds on a general election taking place in Ireland next year from 6/4 to evens following sustained support for a 2011 election over the weekend.
Numerous bets, some described as “significant” by the boomaker, were placed by shrewd political punters over the past 48-hours resulting in 2011 emerging as the most likely year for the next Irish general election. The odds on a general election taking place this year and in 2012 have drifted to 5/2 and 2/1 respectively.
A coalition between Fine Gael and the Labour Party remains the bookies odds-on favourite (2/7) to win the next general election followed by a possible Fianna Fail/Labour partnership at seemingly far less likely odds of 11/2.
Ken Robertson from Paddy Power said “Current betting trends leads us towards a 2011 election and punters are seldom wrong in these scenarios” (more…)
Barnardos boss Fergus Finlay has this morning replaced Senator David Norris as Paddy Power’s favourite to succeed Mary McAleese as the next President of Ireland.
The previous chef de cabinet of the Irish Labour Party now looks likely to secure the Labour Party nomination having formally declared his interest today which resulted in his odds being slashed from 10/1 into 3/1 favourite.
Senator David Norris is the 7/2 second favourite ahead of Fianna Fail MEP Brian Crowley at 9/2 and Labour Party TD Michael D. Higgins at 7/1.
Paddy Power said “Finlay’s decision to throw his hat in the ring today has ignited the betting. After a sluggish start it now appears we have a race on our hands”
Paddy Power are also taking bets on who will win the Labour party nomination with Fergus Finlay their odds-on 4/7 favourite ahead of party colleague Michael D. Higgins at 7/4. (more…)
Paddy Power are taking bets on when debt ridden Anglo Irish Bank will be finally wound down with the bookie making sometime between 2016 and 2020 their 11/4 favourite.
A possible wind-down taking place between 2012 and 2015 is the 11/4 second-favourite ahead of between 2021 and 2025 at 3/1. A more immediate wind-down taking place before 2012 is considered unlikely according to Paddy Power’s odds of 8/1.
The bookie is also taking bets on the final cost of Anglo’s recapitalisation making a bank-busting bailout of between €26 to €27.999 billion their 11/4 favourite.
In some light relief to an otherwise gloomy situation Paddy Power are offering a light hearted match bet on what will be shelved first; the controversial Dublin Bay incinerator or Anglo Irish Bank with the incinerator installed as the red hot 1/2 favourite.
Paddy Power said “This surely is the only way to make money from Anglo Irish Bank. It seems a pretty safe bet that the bank will be wound down but the burning question is when?” (more…)
With the news that An Taoiseach Brian Cowen has been included in a list of the top ten world leaders by Newsweek magazine, Paddy Power are taking bets on what honour will next be afforded to Offaly’s finest son.
Its 20/1 for Brian Cowen to be granted the freedom of his native county Offaly and 50/1 for a statue in his honour to be erected on Dublin’s O’Connell Street.
Leveraging his recent international profile Paddy Power make it just 3/1 for the Taoiseach to guest lecture at Harvard Business School and 10/1 to appear on the cover of Time Magazine.
Other potential accolades on the bookies shortlist include an appointment as President of the Vintners Federation of Ireland at 100/1, an appearance on Dragons Den at 200/1, and Brian Cowen Day becoming a national holiday at 250/1.
Paddy Power said “It seems that the Taoiseach has the world at his feet so we’re happy to raise to a glass to his future achievements” (more…)
