Blue Square TV Trophy: Betting preview 4 May 2011

Blue Square are proud to sponsor one the most historic and prestigious competitions in the Greyhound calendar. The role of honour includes the legendary Scurlogue Champ and more recently Midway Skipper won the title in 2009 and 2010.

This year the race moves to Sittingbourne (9.45pm – Wednesday 4th May) and it should provide a terrific spectacle to those at the track and watching on Sky Sports. The heats for the TV Trophy were run recently and provided three cracking contests and here is a brief preview of the six finalists.

Trap One

Knockies Hannah – winner of 13 of her 44 races for John Mullins, this April 2008 daughter of the early-paced ex-‘Stow stayer Knockeen Star posted the quickest heat winning time (56.95 calculated) last month when gamely beating Minnies Penske. This five time winner at Sittingbourne has a great chance if able to use her early pace to lead the field.

Trap Two

Killishin Masai will always be remembered for his part in the historic triple dead-heat at Romford in January. However, he is a classy stayer in his own right, winning 24 of his 58 career starts. This son of Westmead Hawk has broken track records at Swindon, Kinsley and Harlow. He showed a great combination of class and courage to win his heat by a whisker from Aero Gaga.

Trap Three

Slick Sapphire is lightly raced – this will only be her 15th start in the UK – and as the winner of 6 of her first 14 runs, she has already proved a useful runner over a trip. Her heat win was her first run at Sittingbourne and it says a lot for her class and versatility that she managed to beat Ministry Magpie. A January 2008 daughter of Flying Penske will have a great chance if breaking first.

Trap Four

Areo Gaga will be the outsider of the six runners tonight, but this tough and consistent sort as got form that gives him a chance of giving Paul Young another win in this historic race. When winning the Tony Williams Marathon at Romford in March, Aero Gaga beat both Knockies Hannah and Ministry Magpie. This April 2008 son of Kinloch Brae was only beaten a short head by Killishin Masai in his heat.

Trap Five

Minnies Penske will be a popular choice to give local trainer Tony Collett a famous win. This August 2008 daughter of Flying Penske is in the form of her life, winning 6 of her last eight starts, at five different tracks. In her heat, Minnies Penske never got on terms with Knockies Hannah, but that was her first run for a month and connections expect their staying star to reverse that form.

Trap Six

Ministry Magpie endured a luckless run in the 2010 TV Trophy final at Kinsley and bids to give Lorraine Sams a second win in this event. She has been in blinding form in recent weeks, finishing in the first two in 10 of her last 14 races. Despite being bumped on at least three occasions in her heat, Ministry Magpie stayed on well to only just be beaten by Slick Sapphire.

Latest prices: 5/2 Minnies Penske, 11/4 Ministry Magpie, 4/1 Knockies Hannah, 9/2 Killishin Masai, 5/1 Slick Sapphire, 12/1 Aero Gaga

(expired)2010 Greyhound Derby: In-Depth Betting Preview

It’s back! The greatest greyhound competition in the world starts tonight with 35 heats over three nights, with more 200 dogs starting on their quest for the most prestigious prize in the sport – the Greyhound Derby.

The new look Wimbledon will provide a true test as the hopefuls set out on what they hope will be a month of competitive action. With 27 runners from Ireland and one from Hungary, the interest in this historic race has rarely been higher.

Blue Square are offering a great range of markets to support the Derby including an outright book with each-way betting to six places – this offer will still be valid until the start of the second round.

Who will win? – an impossible question to confidently answer this year, but this trio will hopefully provide some interest deep into May.

Bearing in mind the scarcity of wide seeds this year – only 41 of the 207 entries like the striped jacket, I will focus my picks from this group. Wimbledon seems to favour the wide runners, so there is mathematical logic and track bias in favour of this group.

Barefoot Bullet looks poised to be a major contender. He alerted the British greyhound fans to his prowess when recently posting a scintillating trial (28.51). His trainer Paul Hennessy is one of the best in the business and this striking black son of Honcho Classic is one to follow. Barefoot Bullet runs from trap 5 in Heat 30 on Saturday night.

At a massive price, put Craighall Horse into your portfolio. This son of top sprinter Horseshoe Ping has some classy back form, and some flashy times, at Romford, but showed in a recent trial that this track holds no fears. Craighall House is up against the lightly raced and highly promising Tyrur Biggs (Charlie Lister) in Heat 28, but as the sole wide, I am looking for the Jim Reynolds trained dog to qualify and then progress.

Farloe Skywalker is another to have largely gone under the radar in the build up to the Derby. One of the youngest entries, he was born in June 2008, so is still a puppy, Farloe Skywalker was thought good enough to contest the Puppy Derby at Monmore recently. Trainer Matt and father Terry don’t have a history of under-estimating the ability of their dogs, so if they think this wide-running pup is good enough for the Derby, then I am happy to take the hint. He runs from trap 6 in Heat 23, in which the Scottish Derby winner Nambisco will be short priced favourite.

(expired)Trainers Championship At Doncaster: In-Depth Betting Preview

Arguably the second most prestigious night in the Greyhound calendar, the Trainers Championship – this year run at Doncaster – pits the six top trainers from 2009 in a battle over eight heats. Sky Sports will cover all the action and in addition to Blue Square offering competitive prices on each heat, Blue Square will be betting in running throughout the night on the outright market for the Championship.

And don’t forget that Blue Square’s regular Sky Night bonuses will apply to the SP (next price up), forecasts (10% bonus) and tricasts (15% bonus).

The inevitable favourite is Charlie Lister. Twelve months ago, the master trainer sent out 6 winners from seven races (he had a non-runner in the other heat!). Charlie Lister’s record in this championship in the last five years has been amazing with wins in 2005 and 2007 and runners-up placings in the 2006 and 2008. in 2009 his masterstroke was to take the trouble of getting as much experience of the host track into his team as possible. This pattern has been replicated for this year and although things look set to be a little more competitive this time around, Lister is still the man to beat.

The Newark based kennel is headed by the classy Bandicoot Tipoki. Already the subject of significant support for the Derby in May, Tipoki showed himself to be in good order when winning a recent Trial Stakes in a decent time (29.62). His trap 4 draw is potentially tricky in the 9.10, but Lister is a past master at getting his dogs to break when it matters most, and granted a slick exit from the boxes, Bandicoot Tipoki will be hard to beat.

The most intriguing of the Lister team is Droopys Belletti (runs in the 8.35). This litter brother to Droopys Del Sol, the current star of the marathon scene, should come into his own now put over six bends.

The likes of Fear Zafonic, Jordansoilutions, Carbarns Tom and Tyrur Speedy look set to add more points for Lister and he is the man to beat.

Mark Wallis is the second favrourite and has obvious chances with Directors Wit (8.00), Dalcash Scolari (8.50) and Eye Onthe Storm (9.45).

Many form judges believe Hove handler Seamus Cahill has the best bet of the evening the shape of the prolific sprinter Jimmy Lollie (19.40), but the genial Irishman can also be in the points with the likes of Challengingtimes 8.15), Gilbeyhall Jake (8.50) and Raving Black (9.25).

(expired)Betfred Eclipse – Greyhound Racing Preview 26 Nov

The Betfred Eclipse is the last major Category One competition of the year, open to dogs in the UK, and the final on Thursday (live on Sky Sports) looks to be one of the most competitive of the year.

It isn’t easy to be confident which dog will start favourite, let alone which will win!

The worst ante-post result for Blue Square, is Mark Wallis’s star Eye On the Storm. The October 2007 son of Droopys Vieri was backed from an early morning 6-4 into 4-6 on Saturday night, and continued his impressive run of form when winning the first of the Semi-Finals.

Eye Onthe Storm was outpaced early by both Beautiful City and Bandicoot Tipoki, the favourite then show terrific pace up and took on Bandicoot Tipoki at the first bend. Dipping his shoulder in bullish style, Eye Onthe Storm knocked Tipoki out of the way and powered to the front entering the back straight. Clear by the third bend, he maintained a ferocious pace to lead home the running on Frisby Forfun by almost three lengths, recording 29.99sec for the 500-metres.

That time was eclipsed in the third semi, when Head Iton Ellis, made the most of a plot rails berth to easily beat Romeo Maldini in a classy 29.86sec.

Lenson Bolt, run out of second spot close home, was later reported to have finished lame by trainer Tony Collett, who said: “It was disappointing to see him get caught on the line, but to be honest had he qualified I wouldn’t have been able to run him. He’s lame but until I get him checked out by a vet I won’t know the extent of the problem. I don’t think it’s too serious, but no matter that’s him for this year and he’ll be put away for the winter and brought back for next year’s major events.”

Charlie Lister’s Jordansoilutions confirmed first round form with kennelmate Fear Zafonic when showing a clean pair of paws to the field in the second semi. The son of Brett Lee hit the lids and opened up a four lengths lead by the mid-point and kept on well in the long home straight on to win by a length and three-quarters in a respectable 30.11sec.

Blue Square bet on the final – 5/2 Jordansoilutions, 11/4 Eye Onthestorm, 11/4 Fear Zafonic, 5/1 Romeo Maldini, 6/1 Head Iton Ellis, 14/1 Frisby Forfun.

The supporting card features the final of the Bonus King Sprint, which includes the prolific Jimmy Lollie.

Blue Square’s usual super Sky offers of SP+, 10% bonus to correct forecasts and 15% bonus to correct tricasts will be available.

In addition to Blue Square’s competitive win and each-way markets for all the live Sky races, Blue Square will offer a fantastic range of specials, including match bets on every race.
