Bookmaker Paddy Power has chalked up a wide array of New Year sports bets to help you kiss goodbye to the noughties and say hello to the teenies.
In what will be the biggest betting event ever seen 2010 will undoubtedly be dominated by the World Cup, but it’s also a big year in golf, cricket and F1 with a Ryder Cup, Ashes Series and Hamilton-Button-Schumacher-Alonso showdown to enjoy.
• Europe 4/6 favourites to regain the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor
• Kilkenny hurling team Even money to win a their 5th consecutive All Ireland
• Padraig Harrington 4/1 joint favourite with Rory McIlroy to win RTE Sports Personality 2010
• Andy Murray 6/4 to win his first Grand Slam title (and 4/1 for Wimbledon)
• England 11/2 contenders for football’s World Cup
The BBC Sports Personality award will be a tough one to call next year with top names like Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and Wayne Rooney contending but 2009’s winner Ryan Giggs is a shining example of how even the unlikeliest of sports names can emerge from the long grass to take the accolade. Ryan Giggs had been as big as 40/1 with Paddy Power.
Meanwhile, Padraig Harrington is the 4/1 joint favourite alongside Rory McIlroy to be crowned RTE’s Sports Personality of the year in 2010. (more…)
Following news that Dublin legend Shane Ryan is to hang up his football boots and pick up his Hurl, Paddy Power are offering odds of just 1/2 that Ryan starts for Dublin in their first SHC match next year, and just 13/8 that he scores in that match.
It’s an unlikely 50/1 that Ryan wins the All Ireland SHC with Dublin next year.
Football fans need not despair though, Ryan is 20/1 to reconsider his move and start for the footballers in their first Championship match in 2010.
1-2 Shane Ryan to start for Dublin in their first SHC match next year
1-2 Shane Ryan to start for Dublin in their first NHL match in 2010
13-8 Shane Ryan to score a goal in Dublin’s first SHC match in 2010
20-1 Shane Ryan to start for the Footballers in the first SFC match in 2010
50-1 Shane Ryan to win All Ireland SHC with Dublin Hurlers next year
80-1 Shane Ryan to win Hurler of the year 2010
Bookies Paddy Power have kindly offered to sponsor a new holy JOHN 3:7 banner to GAA fanatic Frank Hogan. The Tipperary native has been appealing for information about his biblical banner after it was stolen from a train carriage last Sunday evening, allegedly by Kildare fans.
A man of deep faith, Frank Hogan is regularly sighted criss-crossing the country to attend GAA matches with his sign in tow. This is the second time his biblical billboard has gone missing. It was flung from a train window a few year’s ago but later recovered.
Bookies Paddy Power are not only offering Mr Hogan a brand new sign, they’re also offering betting on where Frank’s JOHN 3:7 banner turns up. It’s 5/4 that it shows up at Croker on Sunday, 6/4 it arrives at Kildare Garda station and 20/1 it lands beside the holy tree stump in Rathkeale. The odds on the sign making a front row appearance at next years Oxegen music festival is 33/1 while it’s an unlikely 250/1 that it travels all the way to The Vatican.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power himself said: “A match in Croker just wouldn’t be the same without the JOHN 3:7 sign behind the goal on Hill 16 and we’re more than happy to pitch in and help Frank produce a new sign in time for throw in on Sunday!” (more…)
Pat Gilroy’s dependency on the ‘old guard’ could not prevent an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Kerry on Monday in the SFC Quarter finals, and according to Bookie Paddy Power, the 15 year Dubs veteran, Jason Sherlock is 4/9 not to be in the Dublin Panel for their first championship match of 2010.
The Bookie is also betting on whether or not Gilroy himself will be sticking around for next year where he is odd’s on at 1/4 to be in charge for the 2010 campaign.
Ciaran Whelan and Shane Ryan are both 11/8 not to be on the panel next year however Brian Cullen looks to be a cert in the panel for at least one more year at odds of 1/5.
Paddy Power is also betting on what Dublin team will win the All Ireland Championship first, with the footballers at 4/9 and the Hurlers at 13/8.
Shane Ryan, Diarmuid Connolly, David Henry and Conal Keaney to all start Dublin’s first Senior Hurling championship match in 2010 is 16/1 with the Bookie.
Paddy Power said; ‘With Dublin looking so good in the championship this year and Kerry being less than impressive it must have been a real kick in the teeth for all Dub’s fans when Kerry tore them apart on Monday.
It must be tough on the older Dublin players, and it’s hardly surprising if a number of them call it a day.’ (more…)
Tyrone’s Peter Canavan and Kilkenny’s DJ Carey top the betting for the GAA player of the past 25 years according to Bookie Paddy Power.
With a shortlist of 25 footballers and 25 hurlers, TG4 is holding a vote to find out who the greatest player from both sports is from the last 25 years.
In the football, Peter Canavan is followed closely by Maurice Fitzgerald from Kerry at 7/2. Fitzgerald who has two all Ireland medals, three All-Stars, a footballer of the year award and has been picked in the Munster team of the past 25 years, could be a real threat to Canavan, but if we look a little further down the betting, we’ll come across Pat Spillane, with eight All Ireland senior championship winner’s medals and a list of other achievements as long as your arm, this could be a closely run race.
In the hurling, Henry Shefflin is the next in the betting behind DJ Carey. King Henry, who after this year has brought his tally of All Ireland winner’s medals to seven, can also boast about winning four of those in a row, a feat that DJ Carey hasn’t done, and no other team has done in the past twenty five years.
Paddy Power said; ‘I don’t think we’re too far out when it comes to this betting. There is no denying how influential both DJ and Canavan have been for their counties and the games that they represent. However, when faced with a list of the greatest twenty five players of the last twenty five years, choosing one player suddenly becomes a tougher task.’ (more…)
2009 Hurler of the Year
1/5 Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny)
4/1 Lar Corbett (Tipperary)
10/1 John Mullane (Waterford) (more…)
It’s that time of the year again, the third Sunday in September, the most important day on any GAA sports calendar, and that means only one thing, All Ireland Football Final day, and what a day it is to be.
Cork take on, sixth final in a row, Kerry, and although the Kingdom are only too familiar playing football at this stage, Paddy Power place the Rebels in the favourite spot at Evens to win the encounter in 70 minutes.
The bookies find themselves in a lose-lose situation in this final, with punters jumping on Cork and Kerry earlier in the championship when they were as big as 9/1 and 4/1 respectively, Paddy Power alone are facing a six figure payout on the outright market no matter what the result.
Paddy Power said; ‘We always expect a big payout on the football final, but not this much, especially when this figure doesn’t take into account the actual match betting.
Kerry was well backed from the word go, but it’s hard to believe how many punters got on Cork so early. They must have known something we didn’t, fair play to them.’
Paddy Power is also betting on a range of specials in this match, including winning margin, first goalscorer and RTE man of the match, and if the game finishes in a draw, Paddy Power will refund all losing single 1st/last goalscorer, anytime goalscorer, first team goalscorer and winning margin bets on this match.

With the Hurling Championship wrapped up for the year, and the Cats joining the ranks of Cork with their fourth championship in a row, the only thing left to do is pick the Hurler Of The Year and Paddy Power are betting at 4/11 that Tommy Walsh will take that title.
Walsh, who took a belt in the faceguard on Sunday in an incident that saw Benny Dunne sent off, has played a crucial roll in the Kilkenny side throughout their campaign. His performance on Sunday was just overshadowed by the spectacular saves of PJ Ryan that undisputedly kept the Cats in the game.
Man Of The Match, Ryan, also features in Hurler Of The Year Awards as a 33/1 shot with the bookies.
Other stick men in the betting include ‘King’ Henry Shefflin at 3/1. His penalty on Sunday was the defining point in the game for Kilkenny.
His semi-final performance against Waterford could be grounds for Hurler Of The Year on its own, where he scored one goal and fourteen points.
Lar Corbett keeps the Premier County hopes alive, and sits at 6/1 in the betting with Paddy Power. The Tipperary man was ruthless in the last fifteen minutes of the semi-final against Limerick, scoring three goals in quick succession. In the Munster final he got two goals in six minutes that put the game beyond the Deise.
Patrick Tohill, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said; ‘It looks like Tommy Walsh will take the 2009 Hurler Of The Year title. His performance throughout the championship this year really has stood out, but with King Henry hot on his tail with some spectacular individual performances there is always a chance of it going either way.
Paddy Power is also betting on the Young Hurler Of The Year where Paraic Maher is 4/1 and Noel McGrath is the 1/7 favourite. (more…)
If the game finishes in a draw, Paddy Power will refund(maximum refund €300/£200 per customer/bet) all losing single 1st/last goalscorer, anytime goalscorer, first team goalscorer and winning margin bets on this match.
