England come into this one as the 2/5 favourites, with Wales available at 15/2 for a shock home win and the draw a 10/3 chance. The major news in the build-up to this match has been the withdrawal of Wales’ star man Gareth Bale, and with his side still to pick up a point in Group G after 3 matches, that is sure to give England a major boost.
For their part, England got off to a decent start with convincing wins over Bulgaria and Switzerland, before that early optimism was wiped out with a dour 0-0 at home with Montenegro, a performance very much in the mould of their woeful World Cup displays. Therefore, Fabio Capello would certainly settle for a repeat of England’s 1-0 win the last time the sides met here, which was back in 2005 in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, and a repeat of that scoreline is an 11/2 shot with Blue Square, which looks like a solid punt.
Jermain Defoe leads the way for England with 3 goals so far in this campaign, and as such he could be a real tempter at 9/2 for the first goal of the match. There is plenty of speculation that it will be Andy Carroll who gets the nod to partner Wayne Rooney in this one, however, and the 11/8 about him to score at any time also looks like a really decent punt. John Terry returns to the role of skipper in place of Rio Ferdinand, and if you fancy a fairytale start for him second time around, he could be a decent shout for the first goal of the match at 20/1. As ever, Blue Square offer unlimited places on each-way bets for first goalscorers.
Losing Gareth Bale is of course a massive blow to Gary Speed’s side, and his injury takes away a huge amount of the home side’s goal threat. They do have Craig Bellamy of course, the man with 18 international goals to his name and a player whose raw pace has left John Terry wanting more than once in the Premier League, and at 3/1 to score at any time, you’d have to say there was a bit of value with the Cardiff City man. Bellamy to be fouled for a penalty could also be worth a punt at 16/1 in Blue Square’s Player Specials market.
Aaron Ramsey was with Bellamy on loan at Cardiff until earlier this month, and the Arsenal man is still finding his way back after the brutal broken leg he suffered at Stoke more than a year ago, and this will be a huge game for the talented youngster. Ramsey will be expected to provide a creative influence in the middle of the park, and he’ll be desperate to put in a good performance – not least to show that he is Jack Wilshere’s equal. Amongst the range of markets available in Blue Square’s Player Specials, Ramsey is 6/1 to score at any time, 20/1 to score from outside the box, and 14/1 to hit the woodwork.
Ultimately, it would be a real surprise if a Wales side without Gareth Bale were able to beat England, however much Fabio Capello’s side have let themselves down in the past, and given the quality of players available to both managers, you’d have to say England look like value at 2/5. England to win to nil is 11/10, and that could be a good way to go in going for a bit extra value if you’re looking to back the away side here.
