Following Sven-Goran Eriksson’s resignation as director of football at Notts County, Sky Bet are offering odds on where Eriksson will return to football management.
The Swede stepped down from his post at Notts County following the club’s latest takeover by former Lincoln City chairman Ray Trew and Sky Bet make him 4/6 to return to international management this season. During his time at the League Two club Eriksson was linked with coaching jobs with Sweden, North Korea and most recently Nigeria.
7/1 is on offer for Sven to assume a management role in the Barclays Premier League this season and he is 20/1 to manage a Championship side.
Last summer the Magpies were taken over by Middle Eastern consortium Munto who promised Premier League football within five years but Sky Bet now make the club a 100/1 chance to achieve this ambition.
Sky Bet’s football betting spokesman Andy Clarke said: “Eriksson has plenty of international experience so he’s sure to be in demand ahead of the World Cup, but there’s always a possibility he could be tempted back into club management.
“County are now left with unpaid tax bills and no money in the pot, so the Premier League is a more distant dream than ever.” (more…)
Following the news that Cheltenham Town have appointed Kidderminster Harriers boss Mark Yates as their new manager, Sky Bet are offering a number of specials for the League 2 outfit. The Robins, who are currently 3 points off the relegation zone on 20 points, are 5/6 to gain 49 points or more this season (5/6 48 or fewer points). It’s 9/2 for Cheltenham to finish in the top half of the league this season and 5/1 they get relegated.
Sky Bet’s Tim Reynolds said: “Yates did a great job at Kidderminster turning them from a team that was fighting for survival to play-off contenders and also FA Trophy finalists. He faces an uphill task in his first two fixtures taking on Bournemouth at home and then Dagenham & Redbridge away but a result against either of those clubs would be seen as a very positive start.” (more…)

PADDY POWER’S PRE-SEASON BETTING FACTS
Championship
§ The Keane Effect – only Newcastle have had more bets on them winning The Championship than Ipswich
§ Nottm Forest are the second most popular bet to secure promotion this season
§ Freddie Sears and Ched Evans, the two most popular players to top the scoring charts, account for 36% of all bets between them
League One
- 23% of bets placed on the League One Title race are for Leeds
- Huddersfield are the second most backed team for promotion in League One
- 83% of all League One relegation bets so far are backing Stockport for the drop. That’s more than any other club from the 92 in top flight football.
League Two
Bury are the second most backed team to win promotion to League One, behind Notts County
Rotherham, Bradford and Rochdale are one of only three teams in League Two that Paddy Power has not taken a single bet on for relegation. (more…)
Colchester United aim to cash in on Leeds’ latest slip-up in the League One promotion race when they face Gus Poyet’s Brighton at the Community Stadium on Monday night. The 4th-placed Us saw a fantastic set of results play out this weekend as Millwall, Leeds, Swindon and Huddersfield all dropped points in the push for promotion, and now they know they must cash in against the struggling Seagulls who are 17th, just 5 points clear of the relegation zone.
With Aidy Boothroyd – the man who got Watford into the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-finals – now in charge, Colchester go for pragmatism over panache and it certainly seems to work if 13 wins from 16 home games are anything to go by. They have in fact won their last 4 on home turf and come into this one in solid form. This isn’t a side who blow teams away though, and with top scorer Kevin Lisbie only on 11 goals for the term, they don’t have a striker in the mould of Lambert or Holt who can frighten teams in this division. As such, the 4/5 available on under 2.5 goals looks like a good bet with Brighton unlikely to come here and be too reckless, and a tight affair could well be on the cards. We’ve certainly come to expect that with the Us, and there have been fewer than 2.5 goals in 3 of the last 4 games at this ground.
To beef up his underwhelming attacking options, Boothroyd made Kayode Odejayi his first permanent signing in January and the lanky Nigerian has done a decent job, scoring twice in the last 3 games. However, for those looking to back him at 5/1 to open the scoring here, be warned that this is a man who managed a pathetic 4 league goals in 72 outings for Barnsley, and a far better bet is dead-ball specialist and 9/1 shot Anthony Wordsworth, the midfielder with 7 league goals to his name already this campaign.
On to Brighton then, and it’s actually been at home where most of the Seagulls’ problems have come this term, and their away record of 6 wins, 7 draws and 4 defeats is the best in League One after the top 3 of Norwich, Leeds and Charlton, which is remarkable for a side so far down the table. Their recent form has been excellent, with a point at Leeds followed up by a great win at Charlton and a comfortable home win over Exeter, and Gus Poyet’s men have certainly caught the eye as they have eased away from the relegation zone.
Nicky Forster leads the scoring charts for them with 15 – 12 of which have come in the league – and the veteran is available at 7/1 to bag the first goal here, though he has been absent from the side after a row with the manager, and there’s better value elsewhere. One such player who could be worth a few quid is Gary Dicker, the man whose 25 yard rocket sealed the points in Brighton’s last match, the former Irish Under 21 midfielder available at a very tempting 25/1.
So, can the visitors claw their way further out of trouble or will Colchester’s fine home form see them push on for an automatic promotion charge? There’ll certainly be plenty of interest in the home side at the unusual price of 3/4, and with the chance to go third you’d expect them to be right at Brighton from the start. Brighton’s performances in those trips to Leeds and Charlton just can’t be ignored though, and they will come here with renewed confidence from those results, so the draw looks to be the way to go at a very inviting 5/2. Interestingly, 3 of Brighton’s last 4 away games have ended 1-1, and at 13/2, that’s the way I’d go on the Correct Score market.
It’s a very simple question “will both teams score in the game?” but it’s one that punters have been rushing to answer ever since Blue Square offered a coupon at the start of this season. As a trend setter I’ll lay claim to inventing this market many years ago at a previous place of employment, but then it was just focused on live matches. Now at Blue Square Blue Square have a full compliment of prices from the top five English divisions and leagues all over Europe. Plenty of choice and therefore plenty of chances to pick the right games. So what are Blue Square looking for? In this market I like to focus on the away team, if the visitors look good for a goal then we’re more than halfway there. Even home teams that are big outsiders usually give their fans something to cheer about. The prices on offer are usually just under Evens and that makes them perfect accumulator fodder. Just five correct games will take you to a winner bigger than 20/1!!!
This Saturday I’ve picked five matches I think could produce plenty of goals and a winning bet…
Portsmouth v Birmingham in the FA Cup is a close match on paper but I feel both teams will have nothing to lose by going for the result on the day. It won’t make any sense for Portsmouth to rely on their defence and that’s where I see Birmingham being vulnerable as they get caught in two minds. Both teams to score at EVENS.
West Ham United v Bolton Wanderers an important game towards the bottom of the Premier League but not necessarily a tight one. Bolton have been poor on their travels but have managed to score goals. 8 of their 13 away games would have produced a winning bet on this market. The same stat applies to West Ham’s 13 home matches in the division (for a full preview of this game listen to the special podcast here ***insert link***). Both teams to score at 5/6.
Crystal Palace v Sheffield United in the Championship and a battle between two former Neil Warnock clubs. The away side are battling for the play-offs and Palace are looking to escape from a relegation battle compounded by a points deduction. Put simply a draw isn’t good enough for either team and it plays into the hands of ‘goal crazy’ backers. Both teams to score at EVENS.
Charlton Athletic v Stockport County in League 1, and most people would question County’s ability to find the net. I actually think that whilst Charlton are worthy favourites for the game their defence is suspect. Twelve teams from 15 have managed to score at The Valley this season and I expect bottom club Stockport to be one of them. Even for a club propping up the table, nearly 50% of their away games have featured at least one goal for their visiting fans to cheer. Both teams to score at 4/5.
Tamworth v Rushden & Diamonds in the Blue Square Premier, the draw just won’t be good enough for Rushden as they try to make up ground in the promotion race. Tamworth have nothing to lose and have consolidated a mid-table position in their first season back at this level. An open game should ensue (for a full preview of this game listen to the special podcast here ***insert link***). Both teams to score at 4/5.
Accumulator pays 22.76/1 with Blue Square on the ‘Goal Crazy’ coupon!!!
