Carling Cup 2010-11 Final: Arsenal v Birmingham – Detailed betting preview 27 Feb 2011

The first silverware of the season will be handed out at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon with the all-Premier League clash between Arsenal and Birmingham City in the Carling Cup final.

Recent history between these two sides has been very kind to the Gunners, with just one defeat in nineteen meetings with the Blues, and you might be forgiven for expecting to see the Gunners shorter than the 8/15 currently available at Blue Square. The draw is 14/5 and Birmingham are 11/2 outsiders to win in 90 minutes.

Much has been made of Cesc Fabregas’s race to be fit for this one, though he now looks certain to miss out along with Theo Walcott after a bruising midweek encounter with Stoke at the Emirates.

Robin van Persie will captain the Gunners in Fabregas’s absence and Blue Square make the Dutchman 9/4 to score first, 8/11 to score at any time and 1/4 to lift Arsenal’s first silverware since the FA Cup in 2005.

Arsenal’s barren spell of 6 years without a trophy has spurred a significant reversal in Arsene Wenger’s approach to the Carling Cup. Once famous for apparently ‘disrespecting’ this tournament by fielding his reserves, Wenger now sees this trophy as a catalyst to further success for his young side.

Wenger’s record in cup finals, however, is surprisingly hit and miss. The Frenchman has taken Arsenal to eight major finals during his time at Arsenal and has a 50 per cent success rate, winning four and losing four.

Birmingham’s wait for silverware goes back nearly 50 years, but the Midlanders will relish their underdog status here. Alex McLeish’s side have experienced a mini revival in recent weeks, losing only once in their past seven matches in all competitions. Blue Square offer 11/4 for McLeish to win his first trophy in the English game.

The Blues are never going to out-pass the Arsenal, so expect plenty of dead balls heading the way of Nikola Zigic at Wembley. The big Serbian has scored three goals in his past four league games, and is 5/1 to open the scoring and 3/1 to find the net at any time at Wembley.

Paddy Power: Carling Cup 2010-11 Final – Arsenal v Birmingham: Money back if Arsenal lead at anytime in normal time, and fail to win the match 27 Feb 2011

Arsenal are bidding for their first trophy since 2005 when they beat Manchester United in that memorable FA Cup final, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. They face Birmingham who despite underachieving this season, are unbeaten in 11 (in all competitions).

Arsenal are still in 4 competitions and going strong so far this season. They currently lie only 1 point behind the Red Devils in the league, and would love to get that one step closer to a possible Quadruple!

Incidentally, Arsenal have won both of the Premier League meetings between the two sides this season, beating Birmingham 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in October and leaving St Andrews having won 3-0 on New Year’s Day.

This should be a walk in the park for The Goons, however with the buzzing atmosphere at Wembley, and a few injury absentees, this one could still go either way!

Just in case The Goons crumble under the pressure, Paddy’s as usual has you covered!

Carling Cup Money Back Special:

If Arsenal lead at anytime in normal time and fail to win the match, Paddy Power will refund all losing 1st/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast singles on the match. Terms & Conditions Apply.
