(expired)Bookies Tip A Blue Budget – Irish Budget Betting

Bookmaker Paddy Power are tipping blue to be Brian Lenihan’s choice of tie colour tomorrow when he delivers his budget speech to the house and the nation, after a significant gamble emerged in the betting over the weekend.

Paddy Power were offering 5/1 odds that the Finance Minister would don a blue tie on Tuesday, and made yellow/gold their favourite at 2/1 but by Saturday evening it was one way traffic on blue and the odds were quickly slashed to 5/4. By Sunday the bookie had shut shop on the betting.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said, “We were expecting this year’s budget to be a little blue but it looks like it quite literally will be if Lenihan proves our punters right and wears a blue tie!”

Paddy Power might no longer be betting on what colour tie the Minister wears but there are one or two other wagers still on offer ahead of the budget speech tomorrow.

Punters can still avail of the 9/2 on offer that Lenihan takes over 7 sips of water and can snap up the 1/2 on offer that this year’s budget will run over the 55 minute mark. The odds on Lenihan swapping water for whiskey are still the same at 33/1.

Budget Betting – Tuesday 14th October 2008

Sips of Water – It’s a well known fact that when one is nervous or under stress their mouth becomes dry. With this year’s budget expected to be the toughest in decades Brian Lenihan will surely be feeling the pressure and the heat under his collar! Paddy Power reckon Lenihan will take two or three sips this year at 7/4 but aren’t ruling out seven sips or more at 9/2!

How many sips of water will Brian Lenihan take during his Budget speech?

2/1     None or One

7/4     Two or Three

9/2     Four or Five

6/1     Six or Seven

9/2     More than Seven

Need a stiff drink?!

33/1     Lenihan swaps a glass of water for a glass of whiskey

Length of Speech – Back in the days of Charlie McCreevy, the Budget speech would often fall under the 45minute mark but times have changed. Brian Cowen’s speech fell between 45 and 55 minutes last year but this year there’s A LOT more to say! Paddy Power are betting 1/2 that Lenihan’s speech will tip past the 60 minute mark and could even run well into an hour and fifteen minutes making it the longest in Irish Budget speech history!

Length of Speech?

6/1    Under 50mins

9/4    50-60 mins inclusive

1/2    More than 1 hour
