With little time to pack their bags, the F1 teams head to Hungary following yet another very controversial race at the German GP last weekend. Blatant cheating, manipulated race, dirty game. Haven’t we hear this before?
The whole ‘Massa, let Alonso through please mate’ situation was so poorly rehearsed by the Ferrari team that they could easily be given a Razzie Award for the worst acting performance of the year. Team orders aside, the Scuderia headed a superb one-two finish at Hockenheim with Fernando Alonso claiming his 2nd win of the season, a win that puts him right back in contention for the Driver’s Championship title.
Ferrari’s resurgence in Germany means the Blue Square traders have now cut Alonso from 11/1 to 5/2 to win a 3rd World Championship title yet Hamilton remains favourite at 2/1 with Sebastian Vettel also available at 5/2.
An uneventful race (on the track) certainly helped the red cars to unleash their potential – they were not able to show their true pace in the last 2 races due to adverse circumstances – but Stefano Domenicali and his boys can now rest assured that the upgrades they brought to the European GP have helped them to take a big step forward in terms of performance.
Red Bull Racing was the only team that managed to put the Ferraris under some pressure in Germany through local boy Vettel, although he never quite looked like winning. However, had he not made such a poor start, where he lost 2 positions to Alonso and Massa, he might have been a contender for a victory on home soil.
Ferrari’s strong performance at Hockenheim suggest they could well be the team to beat here again, but if you fancy the German driver to claim his 3rd win of the season you can back him at a tidy 5/2. Mark Webber, who was hampered by reliability problems last weekend could offer a bit more value as he is available at 11/2 to bag the win.
Overtaking is very complicated at the Hungaroring due to its narrow track and slow corners so expect a hard-fought qualifying session on Saturday. Vettel will be looking to claim his 4th pole position in a row although the margin to 2nd placed Alonso at Hockenheim (a mere 0.002 seconds) suggests he’ll have to work even harder if he is to snatch pole again.
Neither one of the two Red Bull drivers have managed to claim 4 consecutive poles this term, which is something to consider here, but if you fancy Vettel to do it you can back him at 7/4 – Alonso is available at 2/1 and Webber and Massa are 4/1 and 5/1 respectively.
McLaren raced their new exhaust-blown diffuser (the same type of diffuser Ferrari chose to race in Valencia one month ago) for the first time last weekend although success was limited due to the lack of testing following Hamilton’s crash on Friday practice.
It will be interesting to see whether the Woking based outfit can make it work as there is no margin for error in these crucial stages of the Championship.
McLaren have won 4 of the last 5 races at Hungaroring, so it seems safe to presume they have enough good data to try and find the right set-up for their cars here. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button – both drivers have won the Hungarian GP before – are available at a decent 7/1 and 14/1 respectively to bag 25 points.
