Will a Stig appear in the next series of Top Gear? How will the current Stig exit Top Gear? What will be the colour of the next Stig?

Following the revelations that Ben Collins is Top Gear’s Stig, Paddy Power has tipped the show at 1/3 to retain a “Stig” in the next series. The show has had to recover from the original black Stig’s real name being revealed and was forced to “kill” him off by launching him off an aircraft carrier. The current favourite for the next Stig exit is driving off a cliff at 6/4, although the producers may use more psychological damage and the racing driver is 14/1 to be beaten by Captain Slow, James May. In a more violent end the former Stig’s SAS background may catch up with him and he is 18/1 to be taken out by the SAS or Clarkson may call on recent guest Tom Cruise to assassinate him at 33/1. Red is the 15/8 favourite to be the colour of the new Stig’s overalls and helmet.

The Beeb however are 2/1 to decide the Stig has had his time and may not attempt to revive the mystery around the driver. With power laps of some of the world’s fastest road cars still a highlight of the show, the producers may turn to some former star racing drivers; Heikki Kovalainen is the early favourite at 6/1 followed closely by Rubens Barrichello, the first driver to beat the Stig in the reasonably priced car at 8/1. Early Stig rumours linked Damon Hill as the mystery driver and he is 10/1 to join the show as himself whilst a more glamorous option would be Jodie Kidd at 20/1.

Paddy Power had already suspended the betting and paid out on Ben Collin’s last week, before the drivers name was revealed at the court case surrounding his identity.

Roberto Coladangelo spokesman for Paddy Power said; “We think the production team are going to have some fun with devising how the White Stig meets his end and may even draw more viewers in to find out. However with the show’s popularity still strong the potential to secure a well know racing driver may be tempting for the producers.”

Will O2 arena Dublin Guns N’ Roses fans get their money back? How late will Guns N’ Roses take to the stage in London?

Furious Guns N’ Roses fans are gunning for a full refund after a disappointing performance from the American rockers at the O2 arena in Dublin last night.

After the rockers made their entrance on stage almost an hour late, fans showed their frustration by throwing plastic bottles on the stage. An unhappy Axl and co played five songs before storming off leaving management to address the crowd. MCD boss Denis Desmond managed to calm the 13,000-strong crowd down and the band returned about half an hour later to finish their set.

The incident is now a massive headache for MCD who is no doubt feeling the pressure to refund money to unhappy customers. However, the odds on fans receiving a full refund from the promoters are slim with Paddy Power quoting 4/6 that no refund will be given.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “Axl is notorious for coming on stage late so the fans should have been expecting a late entrance. The band finished their set, albeit hours later, so it’s unlikely MCD will give money back!”

As for Guns N’ Roses’ upcoming London gig on the 13th October, the band are being tipped at 15/8 to take to the stage over an hour and a half late while it’s just 2/1 that they get booed off the stage early by the London audience.

Non-league football: Blue Square Bet Premier, North and South Leagues – In-depth weekend betting preview 4-5 Sep 2010

It’s great to see the league return to our TV screens this weekend with Premier Sports’ special ‘double header’. They open their coverage on Saturday evening with the intriguing clash between Grimsby Town and Luton Town from Blundell Park.

Pre-season favourites Luton started the season brightly recording three straight wins but now find themselves three more games down the line without adding another to their tally. The loss of last season’s leading scorer Tom Craddock to Oxford United on transfer deadline day was another early season blow.

Craddock’s departure will put immediate pressure on Matthew Barnes-Homer who has started the season in great style scoring five times in six matches. The former Kidderminster striker is around 5/1 to net first in this fixture. Luton are the narrow favourites at 6/4 to get back to winning ways.

Grimsby are still finding their feet at this level and despite a couple of decent away wins, they only managed to register their first home win on Bank Holiday Monday beating struggling Histon 2-1. The home win is 8/5 and the draw is 9/4.

The TV cameras and the Premier Sports crew then make the long cross-country journey to South Wales where Newport County host Wrexham on Sunday afternoon. The newly promoted home side have started the season slowly after their runaway success in the South division last year.

That said they have only lost one of their six matches and they look to slowly be getting the hang of things after a nice win at home to Kidderminster and a very worthy draw at AFC Wimbledon. Opponents Wrexham are unbeaten in their last three matches but could only add to their opening day win over Cambridge United by beating Bath City in their last outing.

In between they struggled in four winless matches including home draws with Kidderminster and Barrow and defeats at Eastbourne Borough and Forest Green Rovers. Newport are the 6/5 favourites for this live match, the draw is 23/10 and a Wrexham victory is 2/1.

Back to Saturday’s regular fixtures and Cambridge United will be looking for a quick home double as they take on Gateshead at the Abbey Stadium, following Monday’s success there over Eastbourne Borough. The U’s are strong favourites at 8/11 to show the form that saw them end the last campaign with six wins from six on their home patch.

Striker Richard Brodie will be hoping to get a second chance to score against Fleetwood as he is set to face them for the second time in just six days following his last gasp move from York City to Crawley Town. The Sussex club host Micky Mellon’s team following their 2-1 win over Brodie’s former side at the start of the week.

Brodie will be hoping to team up with his fellow joint ‘top-goalscorer’ from last season Matt Tubbs and both players will be around 7/2 to score first in the match. A home win is strongly favoured on the match prices at 4/7. Darlington have made a low scoring start to life back at this level  and have also managed to hold firm at the back.

Their game away at Eastbourne pitches them against a team already involved in some high scoring matches at this early stage of the season. Something has to give and I’m inclined to predict a low scoring affair after noises coming out of Eastbourne stating that they have to improve in defence. A 1-0 away victory is 6/1 and any away win is 7/5.

Histon have battled their way to five early points from six matches but that total puts the Cambridge club in the relegation zone where they may unfortunately remain all season. My tip to finish bottom were Hayes & Yeading United but Garry Haylock’s side have started brightly and I may have underestimated them.

They certainly appeal at a price of 4/5 to win at home against the struggling Stutes. Kettering Town’s only victory came away at Histon and despite finishing sixth last season I think this campaign will be a difficult one for the Poppies. They welcome AFC Wimbledon to Rockingham Road on Saturday and I can’t look past an away win at an attractive 5/4.

Early leaders Mansfield Town may be brought back down to earth with a bump when hosting self-styled giant-killers Tamworth. The away team have reveled in upsetting the bigger teams over the past couple of years and may make a mockery of their 3/1 quote to bag the points at Field Mill.

The aforementioned loss of Richard Brodie and the visit of a well organised Rushden & Diamonds side will lead me to swerve York on Saturday. Rushden look a decent bet for another away success at 15/8.

Weekend Blue Square Bet North & South Preview

There are a number of odds-on home favourites in the Blue Square Bet North that will no doubt look tempting for those weekend punters placing multiple bets. Early leaders Alfreton Town appear at a restrictive 1/3 to beat Vauxhall Motors and fellow promotion hopefuls AFC Telford United are as short as 4/9 to win at home to Blyth Spartans.

At bigger prices I like the claims of two away teams, starting with newly promoted Boston United. Last season’s Northern Premier play-off winners have opened with five wins from six matches and should be backed at 17/10 to win at Corby Town. The other visiting side that appeal are Nuneaton Town who make the short journey across the Midlands to face Worcester City.

Only one point and one place separate the two sides in the early table but I feel Nuneaton have had the slightly harder games and can win again here at 6/4. In the Blue Square Bet South Bromley have been blazing a trail at the top of the division with a one-hundred percent record, but I think that will come to an end at Maidenhead this weekend.

A home win looks overpriced at 7/5 considering the Kent side have ridden their luck during some of their victories. Dover make plenty of appeal at 8/11 to register a home success over Eastleigh, who have been beaten by two of their fellow promotion hopefuls already.

ALAN’S BEST WEEKEND TREBLE
Hayes & Yeading United (to beat Histon)
Nuneaton Town (to beat Worcester City)
Maidenhead United (to beat Bromley)
Pays just over 9/1 at the current Blue Square prices.

Will Alex McLeish see out the 2010-11 season at Birmingham City?

Alex McLeish is 6/4 with Sky Bet not to see out the 2010/11 season at St Andrews following the news that the 51 year-old has stalled on signing a new deal with Birmingham City. It’s understood that the Blues are keen to offer McLeish a new deal after guiding them to ninth spot last season but the former Rangers and Scotland boss is asking for too much money.

1/2 is on offer for the Scotsman to see out the season with his current club.

The news has also led to McLeish’s odds to be cut to 12/1 (from 20/1) to be the next Aston Villa manager.

Sky Bet’s Tim Reynolds said: “McLeish has done a great job with Birmingham City, guiding them to promotion from the Championship and then a top 10 finish in the Premier League the following season so it would be a surprise to see the midlands club let the 51 year-old go.”

Who will be the next Aston Villa manager? Betting update 2 Sep 2010

Sky Bet have cut Alan Curbishley’s odds to 3/1 (from 11/1) in their next Aston Villa manager betting following the news that the 52-year-old has met with Villa owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner about the vacant position.

Current caretaker manager Kevin Macdonald is still the 6/5 favourite. Alex McLeish, who is struggling to reach a new contract agreement with Birmingham City, is 12/1.

Sky Bet’s Tim Reynolds said: “Since the news broke that Curbishley has been interviewed for the vacant Villa post, he’s the only person we’ve seen money for this morning. Villa owner Randy Lerner said that he wants a manager with Premier League experience and with Curbishley having spent time with both Charlton Athletic and West Ham, he will certainly bring that to the table.”

Non-league football: Blue Square Bet Premier, North and South Leagues – August 2010 awards

Brown Lands August Award As Wombles Start Brightly

Terry Brown from AFC Wimbledon has been named the Blue Square Bet Premier ‘manager of the month’ for August. Brown’s side have made a great start to the season and currently sit second in the table tied on points with early leaders Mansfield Town and big-spending Crawley.

The Wombles started their campaign with three straight wins. Their defence held firm as they went over 300 minutes without conceding a goal until Shane Huke found the net in their only defeat at Rushden & Diamonds. The South West London club bounced back with a hard fought 3-2 win at Eastbourne Borough before drawing with fellow promotion hopefuls Newport County on Bank Holiday Monday. Brown previously won the award in December of last season.

The Blue Square Bet North ‘manager of the month’ for August is Nicky Law from Alfreton Town. Law’s side followed on from their fantastic pre-season form to record six wins from six matches in the opening month of the campaign. The team found the net 19 times during that period and achieved two 5-1 away wins in the process.

The Blue Square Bet South ‘manager of the month’ for August is Mark Goldberg from Bromley. The Kent club finished the month with an unblemished one-hundred percent record after some difficult looking fixtures. Goldberg’s side beat pre-season title favourites Havant & Waterlooville before important victories over local rivals Welling United and promotion hopefuls Bishop’s Stortford.

From ‘Fleet To Fleetwood Nobody Can Stop Vieira

Magno Vieira from Fleetwood Town has been named the Blue Square Bet Premier ‘player of the month’ for August. Vieira joined the Lancashire club in pre-season and wasted no time in making his mark, scoring on his league debut in a 1-1 draw at Rushden & Diamonds.

The Brazilian born striker then struck twice in a three goal victory for his side over early table-toppers Mansfield Town and also scored what turned out to be the winning goal in a Bank Holiday Monday win over York City. His tally for the period was five goals in six matches. Vieira won the same award in January of last season when in similar form for his previous club Ebbsfleet United.

The Blue Square Bet North ‘player of the month’ for August is Phil Trainer from AFC Telford United. The midfielder has scored six goals in six unbeaten matches for his side including double strikes in the home wins over Nuneaton Town and Gloucester City.

The Blue Square Bet South ‘player of the month’ for August is Nathan McDonald from Braintree Town. The Iron goalkeeper has been in fantastic form as his side have climbed the table to sit in second place at this early stage. McDonald kept five clean sheets in six matches and made some incredible saves as the Essex club remained unbeaten.

2010/11 Season – August awards summary:

Fair City: Dillon family – In-depth betting preview

With the much-hyped arrival of the Dillon family into Carrigstown next week, leading bookie Paddy Power are taking bets on which of the sibling sexpots will be first to set pulses racing in RTE’s flagship soap ‘Fair City’.

The bookie is offering odds on which of the three sassy sisters will be first to have an affair and make flirty Neasa Dillon their long odds-on favourite after the sexy blond tempted married debt collector Damien Halpin into her bed earlier this summer. Feisty Neasa is also favourite to be the first sister to become pregnant and to tie the knot.

Older sister Caoimhe is the bookies 5/6 favourite to be first to get arrested and also carries the dubious honour of being the most likely to exit the series first also at odds of 5/6.

Betting is also available on which member of the Dillon Family will be first to get the ‘Gift Grub Treatment’ and become a regular character voiced by Mario Rosenstock on the Today FM Breakfast Show. Dad, Tommy, played by Geoff Minogue is the current 5/4 favourite.

Paddy Power said “It looks like Charlie’s Angels are coming to Fair City and if Neasa’s antics with the debt collector are anything to go by it seems that Carrigstown is set for some wild ride”

Paddy Power extends Cheltenham sponsorship

Cheltenham Racecourse today announced that leading bookmaker Paddy Power is to back The Paddy Power Gold Cup and two other races at The Open meeting for a further three years until 2012.

The Open, which takes place from 12th to 14th November in 2010, is the highlight of the first half of the Jump racing season and has grown significantly in profile with the backing of Paddy Power. Since Paddy Powers backing attendances have risen significantly to around 70,000 over the three days and the event is now the third biggest meeting of the Jump racing season after The Festival at Cheltenham and Aintree’s Grand National meetings.

The deal includes The Paddy Power Gold Cup, Fridays paddypower.com Handicap Chase and Sundays Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle, in addition to joint marketing and commercial initiatives, including a 10 free bet for online ticket purchasers who are not already Paddy Power customers (terms and conditions apply).

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Paddy Power Gold Cup and Paddy Power plan to mark the golden moment with more of the fun and eye-catching initiatives that have helped to make the meeting the success it is today. The racecourse also has exciting plans to mark the occasion, including a special offer for online customers who book in September for Paddy Power Gold Cup Day. Those customers will have a chance to get their money back if AP McCoy rides the winner of the big race.

Paddy Power himself said: Paddy Power has sponsored at the Paddy Power Gold Cup since 2003 and our renewal for a further three years will take our successful partnership to ten years. The agreement underpins Paddy Power’s continued commitment to racing in a time of adversity for the industry and we’re ecstatic to be part of an extremely rare good news story concerning racing sponsorship, bucking the recent trend of so many others pulling the plug on their support.

“Im delighted that we will continue to feature at the best racecourse in the world. We have a terrific working relationship with Cheltenham and our combined efforts have established the meeting as one of the most enjoyable must-do events in the racing calendar. Just like the thousands of racegoers that join us for the three days of top class Jump racing, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Peter McNeile, Director of Sponsorship, Cheltenham Racecourse, added: “The Open has continued its growth over the past few years thanks in no small part to the energy that Paddy Power has put behind their sponsorship. Were grateful for that and the renewal of this deal shows that there is still a keen interest in the sport of Jump racing, especially here at Cheltenham.”

Will there be a bedbug pandemic? Which will be the next country to report a bedbug epidemic, after the USA?

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power are betting that bedbugs will bite down under next as New York struggles to keep the bloodsucking critters under control.

Major New York Stores like Victoria Secret, Abercrombie and Fitch and even The Empire State Building have all reported infestations, and it’s now feared that it’s only a matter of time before the bedbugs go abroad.

Australia is the 11/4 favourite to be the next country to report a bedbug epidemic while neighbouring Canada is 5/1 to be hit. The odds on Britain breaking out with a bedbug epidemic are 6/1 followed by Ireland at 25/1.

With tourists numbers expected to soar ahead of the next Olympic Games Paddy Power are quoting 10/1 that the World Health Organisation will confirm a worldwide bedbug pandemic by the end of 2012.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, explained: “The bed bugs are busy taking a bite out of the big apple at the moment but there’s a good chance the little mites will make their way to other territories. We’re feeling itchy already!”
